2012 Ambitions

Last year, an inspiring initiative caught my eye at Everyday Lovely: the “40 Bags In 40 Days” challenge. The goal, as the name suggests, was to declutter 40 bags worth of items within 40 days, a testament to focused effort and tangible results. While I admired the swiftness of that challenge, I recognized my own pace. I’m someone who savors the process, occasionally gets sidetracked by the internet’s endless wonders, and finds joy in a more deliberate approach. My personal commitment, therefore, has evolved into a sustainable, long-term endeavor: to transform two rooms per month. This isn’t just about decluttering; it’s a comprehensive mission to organize, sanitize, “defunkinize,” and infuse new life into every corner of my home. It’s about finishing lingering projects that have been on the back burner for far too long and creating spaces that truly reflect serenity and order.

I understand this is a significant undertaking, and sometimes motivation can wane. That’s where you come in! I thrive on encouragement and accountability. So, please, if you’re reading this and feel a connection to my journey, reach out. Email me, connect with me on Facebook, send a tweet, or drop a line on Google+ and ask me: “How are you doing with your home refresh?” Your support would mean the world, acting as a gentle nudge and a reminder of the beautiful vision I hold for my home. I truly beg you to join me in this journey, even if it’s just to check in!

My journey toward a truly refreshed and revitalized home feels like a long, winding path. It’s not a sprint but a marathon, filled with small victories and persistent efforts. Each room presents its unique set of challenges, from hidden clutter to unfinished DIY dreams. But with a clear vision and a commitment to tackle two spaces every month, I’m confident that this path will lead to a home that is not just clean, but truly peaceful, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. It’s about creating an environment where everything has a purpose and a place, fostering calm and productivity.

One of the most exciting categories of projects on my list involves giving forgotten items a new lease on life. Take these suitcases, for instance. They are more than just old travel companions; they are canvases waiting to be transformed. My vision is to paint them, perhaps with intricate designs, bold colors, or subtle patterns, turning them into unique storage solutions or decorative accents. This creative endeavor is just one item on a much longer list of DIY projects that promise to add character and functionality to my home. From repurposing furniture to crafting personalized decor, these projects are not only about enhancing aesthetics but also about the satisfaction of creating something beautiful with my own hands. They are a testament to the idea that with a little creativity, even the oldest items can find a new purpose and a vibrant presence in our living spaces, reducing waste and fostering individuality.

Then there are the dreaded drawers. These unassuming compartments often become black holes, swallowing everything from misplaced keys to forgotten stationery, creating a frustrating hunt every time something is needed. My drawers are currently brimming with an assortment of unrelated items, each crying out for a proper home. The challenge here is to not just empty them, but to establish a system where every single item has a designated spot. This involves sorting, categorizing, and investing in clever drawer dividers or small containers. Imagine the relief of opening a drawer and instantly finding what you need, without rummaging through a chaotic jumble. This level of organization isn’t just about neatness; it’s about reclaiming precious time and reducing daily stress, making my home a more efficient and harmonious environment. An organized drawer system is a simple yet powerful step towards a more functional and peaceful home, promoting a sense of control and calm in daily routines.

Baskets, while often intended as stylish storage solutions, can sometimes become repositories for the unknown – filled with “who knows what?” My baskets are no exception, a testament to the fact that even attractive containers can hide a multitude of random objects. And what is that little light doing tucked away underneath one of them? This discovery highlights the pervasive nature of clutter, often creeping into every available nook and cranny. My task is to meticulously sort through each basket, determining what stays, what goes, and what needs a more appropriate home. This process will involve a ruthless decluttering session, followed by a thoughtful approach to utilizing these baskets for truly functional and categorized storage. Perhaps one basket will hold throw blankets, another crafting supplies, and another, seasonal decor. It’s about transforming these “mystery boxes” into intentional storage units that enhance the organization and visual appeal of my rooms, ensuring that every item stored is easily identifiable and accessible, eliminating the frustrating search for misplaced items.

Underneath this beautiful buffet, a treasure trove (or perhaps a collection of neglected items) awaits its fate. Books, old bottles, and gold-framed pictures, currently gathering dust, are begging for attention. The books need to be properly cataloged and shelved, perhaps moving to a dedicated reading nook or being donated if they no longer serve a purpose. The old bottles hold potential for decorative accents; cleaned and repurposed, they could add a vintage charm to a display. As for the gold pictures, they are crying out for new prints – updated family photos, inspiring artwork, or perhaps a creative collage. This area is a prime example of how even elegant furniture can conceal significant clutter. My plan is to declutter these hidden spaces, ensuring that anything stored underneath is intentional, organized, and contributes to the overall aesthetic of the room, rather than detracting from it. It’s about making every inch of space work smarter, not harder, to create a harmonious and visually appealing home environment where beauty and functionality coexist effortlessly.

And then there’s the dark, scary closet. Every home seems to have one – a space that becomes a dumping ground for anything that doesn’t immediately fit elsewhere. Mine is a chaotic mix: rolls of wrapping paper tangled together, an assortment of mirrors, various “metal thingies” whose purpose has long been forgotten, and coats vying for precious hanging space. This closet is a prime candidate for a complete overhaul. My goal is to transform it from a neglected storage void into a highly functional and accessible space. This means investing in proper shelving, clear storage bins for wrapping paper and craft supplies, and perhaps hooks for bags or accessories. The mirrors will either be hung or safely stored, and the mystery metal objects will finally be sorted – kept if useful, or bravely let go. Optimizing closet space is about creating a system that works for my needs, making it easy to find what I’m looking for and ensuring that every item stored there has a clear purpose and proper place. A well-organized closet can significantly reduce morning stress and contribute to an overall sense of order in the home, turning a “scary” space into a sanctuary of efficiency.

Paper clutter, specifically junk mail and bills, is a relentless adversary in the battle for an organized home. Piled alongside them, I find random items like a plastic scraper and a roll of blue tape – remnants of past projects or forgotten tasks. This image vividly captures the daily influx of items that can quickly overwhelm surfaces and create visual noise. My strategy to combat this involves implementing a robust paper management system. This means immediately sorting incoming mail: trash, shred, or file. Bills will be handled promptly, either paid and filed digitally or physically. Reducing junk mail by unsubscribing from unnecessary lists will also be a priority. As for the random tools, they need to be reunited with their respective categories in the workshop or utility drawer. Establishing clear zones for incoming mail and a routine for processing it is crucial for maintaining a tidy and stress-free environment. This small yet impactful change can prevent paper piles from forming and ensure that important documents are always at hand, leading to a much more functional and aesthetically pleasing living space.

Finally, the ever-growing stacks of newspapers and magazines represent another common source of household clutter. While they offer valuable information and entertainment, their accumulation can quickly overwhelm surfaces and detract from a serene home environment. My challenge here is two-fold: first, to establish a consistent recycling routine, and second, to rethink my consumption of print media. This involves immediately recycling old issues after reading, perhaps keeping only a select few for inspiration or reference. I’ll also explore digital subscriptions as a more sustainable and space-saving alternative. Creating a designated “reading corner” with a small, stylish basket for current reads can help contain the spread. The goal is to prevent these items from piling up, ensuring that my home remains neat and tidy. This shift in habit not only declutters physical space but also contributes to a more mindful approach to information consumption, reducing waste and fostering a sense of calm and order throughout the house. Embracing digital alternatives where possible and maintaining a strict “one in, one out” policy for physical copies will be key to managing this type of clutter effectively and maintaining an organized, visually appealing home.

I can do this! Here’s to reFreshing my home in 2024 and beyond!

This journey of transformation is not just about organizing physical items; it’s about reclaiming peace of mind, fostering creativity, and building a more functional and beautiful sanctuary. Each small step, each decluttered drawer, each painted suitcase, brings me closer to the vision of a home that truly nourishes the soul. I believe in the power of intention and consistent effort, and I’m excited to see the amazing changes unfold. This isn’t just a fleeting resolution; it’s a commitment to a lifestyle of order, beauty, and mindful living, setting the stage for a refreshed outlook every single day.
