As mentioned earlier, while I used my versatile Cricut Maker for this task, any Cricut cutting machine you own will be perfectly capable of executing these cuts with precision. The key to successful Iron-On Vinyl projects lies in a crucial step: mirroring your image.
Before you send your design to the machine to cut, it is absolutely imperative that you select the “MIRROR IMAGE” option within Cricut Design Space for each mat. Iron-On Vinyl is designed with a carrier sheet (the shiny, clear side) that protects the vinyl and is peeled off after heat application. When cutting, you always place the Iron-On Vinyl shiny side down on your Cricut mat. Therefore, to ensure your design appears correctly (not backward) once it’s ironed onto your tote bag, the machine must cut a mirrored version of it. Forgetting this step is a common beginner mistake and can result in wasted material, so always double-check!
For best results, place your Iron-On Vinyl onto a standard grip Cricut mat with the glossy, carrier sheet side facing down. Make sure it’s smoothed out to avoid any bubbles or wrinkles that could affect the cut. Select “Iron-On” or “Heat Transfer Vinyl” as your material setting in Design Space, and then load your mat into the machine. Once all the negative space is removed, you should be left with your complete design, perfectly adhered to the sticky side of the clear carrier sheet, ready for heat application.

This invaluable resource provides specific temperature and time settings for virtually all materials, ensuring you get the best results every time.
Before placing your vinyl design, always preheat your canvas bag for 5 seconds. This removes any moisture and wrinkles, creating an ideal surface for the vinyl to adhere to. Once preheated, carefully place the black text portion of your Iron-On Vinyl onto your canvas bag, sticky side down with the carrier sheet facing up. Take your time to center it perfectly. Then, cover the design with your Cricut Iron On Protective Sheet. This protective sheet is indispensable as it prevents scorching and ensures even heat distribution.
Place your Cricut EasyPress on top of the protective sheet, directly over your design. Apply gentle, even pressure for 30 seconds at 340 degrees Fahrenheit. Since the design is likely larger than the EasyPress plate itself, you will need to press in a few overlapping sections to ensure all parts of the design receive adequate heat and pressure. Be sure to overlap each press slightly to avoid any unadhered spots.
Once the 30 seconds are up, remove the EasyPress. Allow the Iron-On Vinyl to cool down for approximately 15 seconds. This type of vinyl often performs best with a “warm peel.” Carefully and slowly peel the clear plastic carrier sheet off the canvas bag. If any part of the vinyl begins to lift, gently lay the carrier sheet back down, reapply the protective sheet, and press again for another 10-15 seconds before attempting to peel once more.

Once positioned correctly, place the protective sheet over the entire design one more time and press for a final 15-20 seconds. This shorter press is often sufficient for the top layer and helps to ensure that all layers are fully bonded without over-processing the underlying vinyl. After a 15-second cool-down, carefully peel off the plastic carrier sheet from the green stem. And just like that, in three easy layers, you’ve created a vibrant and meaningful DIY tote bag!
