Gathering your materials is the first exciting step in any sewing project. Here’s what you’ll need to bring your puppy design to life:
- Brown Bath Towel: This will form the main body of your hooded towel. I usually find excellent, absorbent options at Target, but any good quality bath towel will work. Choose a rich brown shade to give your puppy a classic, friendly look.
- Matching Brown Hand Towel: This smaller towel is crucial for creating the hood and the puppy’s ears and snout. Ensuring it matches your bath towel will give your finished project a cohesive and professional appearance.
- Small Amounts of White Fabric: Ideal for the whites of the puppy’s eyes. Scraps from previous projects are perfect here!
- Small Amounts of Black Fabric: For the pupils of the eyes and the nose. A little goes a long way.
- Small Amounts of Dark Brown Fabric: This will be used for the inner parts of the snout, adding depth and definition to the puppy’s face.
- Small Amounts of Red Fabric: For the adorable little tongue peeking out. A bright pop of color will make your puppy even more endearing.
- Iron-on Paper-Backed Adhesive: This essential material simplifies the applique process significantly, making it easy to attach your facial features securely before stitching. Look for brands like HeatnBond Lite or Wonder-Under.

Tips for Choosing Materials: Opt for towels that are soft and absorbent, as they will be used on delicate skin. For the fabric scraps, choose tightly woven cottons that won’t fray easily, especially since they’ll be appliqued. Pre-wash all your fabrics and towels before you start to account for any shrinkage and ensure all colors are colorfast.
Detailed Instructions for Making the Puppy’s Head:
While my basic tutorial covers the main towel assembly, we’ll now focus on the heart of this project: creating the distinctive and adorable puppy dog face that will make your hooded towel truly special.
1. Preparing the Hand Towel for the Hood:
Begin by taking your matching brown hand towel. We need to reshape it slightly to form the basis of our hood. Cut your hand towel in half horizontally. This means you’ll have a wider, shorter piece rather than a long, skinny one. This dimension is perfect for forming the hood around a child’s head. Next, take one of the cut edges (the raw edge, not the original finished edge) and fold the selvage edge under by about 3 inches. Press this fold neatly with an iron, then sew it securely in place. This creates a clean, finished bottom edge for your hood. Now, flip the entire piece over. You will primarily be working on the side where this seam is not visible, which will be the exterior of your finished hood.
2. Creating and Attaching the Eyes and Nose:
Refer to your pattern pieces. Carefully cut out the eye and nose shapes from your white and black fabrics, respectively. Precision here is key to achieving that adorable puppy look. Next, using the pattern pieces as guides, cut corresponding shapes from your paper-backed iron-on adhesive. Iron the adhesive pieces to the back of your fabric face pieces, following the manufacturer’s instructions. This creates a temporary bond that holds your appliques in place before stitching.
Once cooled, peel off the paper backing. Position your eyes where you want them on the prepared hand towel piece. They should be centered horizontally and placed a few inches above the bottom finished edge of the towel. Take your time to ensure symmetrical placement.
Once you’re happy with the placement, iron them firmly in place according to the adhesive’s instructions. This secures them temporarily. Now, using your sewing machine, stitch a tight zig-zag stitch all the way around the outer edge of each eye. This not only permanently attaches them but also creates a neat, finished edge that prevents fraying and adds to the charming, cartoon-like appearance of the puppy’s face.
Repeat this process for the nose piece: center it precisely on one of your snout pieces (which you’ll cut in the next step), iron it down, and then secure it with a tight zig-zag stitch. This layered approach adds dimension to the face.
3. Crafting the Snout, Ears, and Tongue:
Now, let’s bring more features to life! From your remaining hand towel, cut out four ear pieces and two snout pieces using the pattern. Carefully lay out your pattern pieces on the towel to ensure everything fits before making your cuts, maximizing your fabric usage. Additionally, cut two tongue pieces from your red fabric. Having two pieces for each of these elements will allow us to sew them right sides together and turn them for a clean, professional finish.
With your pieces cut, place two ear pieces right sides together and sew around the outer edges, leaving the flat, bottom side open. Repeat for the other two ear pieces, and for both snout pieces. Do the same for your two red tongue pieces, leaving a small opening on one straight edge for turning. Once sewn, carefully trim the seam allowances and clip any curves to ensure a smooth finish when turned. Then, turn everything right side out, gently pushing out all the edges and corners with a point turner or a dull pencil. Press them flat with an iron for a crisp look.
4. Assembling the Facial Features:
Now it’s time to put all the pieces together to form your puppy’s endearing face. Take one of your finished snout pieces. Position the red tongue piece underneath the snout, letting it peek out slightly, just as a happy puppy’s tongue would. Pin this assembly right below the eyes you’ve already attached on your hand towel base. Once positioned to your liking, secure the snout (and the tongue underneath) in place with a zig-zag stitch all the way around its perimeter, similar to how you stitched the eyes. This firmly attaches the snout and the tongue simultaneously, creating a cohesive look.
5. Adding the Floppy Ears:
The ears are what truly give our puppy its character! To attach them, you’ll need to create small openings in the hand towel. Snip a small, horizontal hole in the spot where you want each ear to emerge. I suggest placing these just to the side of the eyes, near the top of the eye line, to give the puppy that cute, slightly floppy ear look. Be careful not to make the hole too large – just big enough for the raw, open edge of your finished ear piece to slide through.
Once the hole is made, slide the open, flat end of one ear through the opening. On the underside of the hand towel (the side with the seam we sewed earlier), you will now see the raw edges of the ear. Carefully sew these raw edges closed, stitching through all four layers (two layers of the hand towel and two layers of the ear). This might be a bit thick, so go slowly with your sewing machine. Repeat for the other ear. This method securely attaches the ears and allows them to stand out playfully from the hood.
6. Forming the Hood:
Congratulations, your puppy’s face is now complete! The next step is to transform this flat piece into a functional hood. Fold the hand towel in half, with the puppy face on the inside (right sides together). Align the raw, open edges of the hand towel perfectly. Stitch up this raw edge with a zig-zag stitch, forming a cone-like shape. This seam will run along the back of the hood. After stitching, you’ll have a pointed top to your hood. To give it a softer, more rounded head shape, fold the towel at the tip of this point, creating a small triangle, and sew a straight line across the very tip. Then, snip off the excess fabric above your new stitch line. This simple technique creates a more natural, rounded profile for your puppy’s head, making it much more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing.
7. Finishing the Towel:
With the puppy’s head complete and the hood formed, you’re in the home stretch! The final step is to attach this adorable hood to your main bath towel.
