For my personal project, I opted for vibrant red felt because it was readily available in my craft stash. However, feel absolutely free to explore different coordinating colors that catch your eye! If you decide to change the color of the spikes or other elements, the process is incredibly simple. Just select one triangle, then head over to the “Color Sync” option located on the right-hand side of Design Space. From there, you can effortlessly drag all the red shapes to your chosen new color. I’ve previously cut felt using my Cricut Explore Air 2, which did an acceptable job when the felt was backed with heat-n-bond. However, the Maker’s ability to cut plain, unbacked felt so flawlessly was a revelation and a significant upgrade. It makes intricate designs and clean edges effortless, opening up a world of possibilities for felt crafts.

Once your primary felt color is cut, proceed to cut any secondary colors, such as the red felt for the spikes, following the same precise process.

After removing your felt pieces, you might notice some fuzzy residue left on your FabricGrip™ Mat. Don’t worry about it! This is perfectly normal and won’t affect future cuts. Just leave it be; the mat is designed to handle this.

Assembling Your Dinosaur Spikes:

One key design element for a realistic dinosaur costume is ensuring the spikes stand upright and proud. Knowing that single felt triangles wouldn’t achieve this effect, I opted to hot glue two triangles together for each spike. This simple technique adds the necessary rigidity. Apply a thin bead of hot glue along one edge of a felt triangle, then carefully align and press another triangle on top. Repeat for all spikes.

To prepare the spikes for attachment, leave about a half-inch of the bottom edge exposed and unglued when combining the two triangles. This unglued flap will be crucial for securely attaching the spikes to the hooded sweatshirt, giving them a sturdy base.

Attaching the Spikes to the Sweatshirt:

Before gluing, lay your hooded sweatshirt flat and use a fabric marker or chalk pen to draw a straight line down the center of the back, extending from the top of the hood to the bottom hem. This line will serve as your guide for perfectly aligned spikes.

Now, it’s time to bring your dinosaur to life! Apply a generous amount of hot glue to the exposed bottom flap of each dino spike and carefully press it firmly onto the sweatshirt, aligning it along your drawn center line. Adding Facial Features:

While not explicitly pictured in every step, the facial features are crucial for completing the dinosaur’s friendly (or fierce!) face. First, hot glue the smaller black felt pupils onto the larger white felt circles to create the eyes. Next, attach these assembled eyes to the sides of the hood, positioning them playfully above where your child’s ears would be. Finally, carefully glue the white felt teeth along the inside edge of the hood, creating a fun, toothy grin that will frame your child’s face.

Crafting Claws and the Mighty Tail:

To create the formidable claws, hot glue the smaller white felt claw pieces onto the red felt hand and foot cut-outs. A useful tip here: you have the flexibility to either glue these assembled claws onto separate felt hand and foot pieces (as shown) or, for simplicity, directly onto the sleeves and pant legs of the sweatshirt. If you opt for separate hand/foot pieces, be aware that they might be a bit loose and need to be tucked into your child’s sleeves and shoes for photographs or a neater appearance. For my son’s school parade, I found it easier to remove the separate hand and foot pieces, and he still looked incredibly cute and comfortable. Experiment to see what works best for your little one!

Constructing the tail requires a technique similar to traditional sewing, but we’ll adapt it for hot glue. Take one of your long felt triangle tail pieces. Carefully apply hot glue along one long side, and then place your previously constructed spikes (facing inwards, not outwards) along this glued edge. Next, apply hot glue along the two long sides of the first tail triangle. Place the second long felt triangle directly on top, aligning all edges perfectly. Press down firmly and allow it to dry completely for a minute or two to ensure a strong bond. Once dry, gently turn the tail inside out. This clever trick creates a “seamless” and professional finish for your dinosaur tail, hiding all the hot glue lines. To give the tail volume and shape, generously stuff it with poly-fill. For the tail’s base (where it attaches to the child), I ended up using a larger leftover felt template for a foot – a happy accident that allowed me to avoid wasting scraps! I folded the perimeter of this circular felt piece inwards and hot glued it all together to create a neat opening. If this opening doesn’t fit comfortably around your child’s waist, simply cut a separate felt circle, glue it to the tail’s base, and then you can easily pin the tail onto the back of their pants. For my son, the opening fit perfectly, so I just tucked it into his pants, and then draped the hooded sweatshirt over the top to conceal the attachment point.

In true procrastinator fashion, I completed this fantastic costume the night before my son’s school parade! I had initially bought him a costume, but then he expressed a last-minute wish to be a dinosaur, and as any devoted parent knows, mommy absolutely has to deliver on those special requests!
