Gather Your Sewing Essentials: What You’ll Need

Before diving into this rewarding DIY project, ensure you have the following supplies at hand. Having everything ready will make the crafting process smooth and enjoyable:

Remember that each repeated action brings you closer to your beautiful finished product. Don’t hesitate to take short breaks to stretch or refresh your eyes. 5. Construct the Envelope Back

Cut two such pieces. On one 30.5-inch edge of each back piece, create a neat hem. A double-fold hem works wonderfully here: fold the edge over by about ½ inch, press, then fold it over again by another ½ inch and press. Stitch this hem down securely. This creates a clean, finished edge that will be visible when the pillow cover is complete. Once hemmed, you’ll place your back pieces. Lay your completed sunburst front piece right side up. Then, take your two hemmed back pieces. Lay the first back piece right side down on top of the front, aligning its raw edges with three sides of the front panel (leaving the hemmed edge towards the center). Use plenty of pins to hold everything in place, especially at the corners. Once securely pinned, take your pillow cover to the sewing machine. Stitch around the entire perimeter of the cover, using a straight stitch and a consistent seam allowance (typically ½ inch). Remember to backstitch at the beginning and end of your seam to secure the stitches, preventing them from unraveling.

7. Finish with Trimming and Insertion

Once you’ve completed sewing around the perimeter, your pillow cover is almost ready! Before turning it right side out, it’s a good practice to trim the seam allowances. Carefully trim the edges to about ¼ inch, and clip the corners diagonally (being careful not to cut through your stitches). This step reduces bulk in the corners, ensuring a sharper, neater finish once the pillow is turned. Trimming also helps prevent excessive fraying on the inside. Now, reach through the envelope opening, turn your pillow cover right side out, gently pushing out the corners to create crisp points. Give it a final press with your iron if needed. Finally, carefully insert your pillow forms into the freshly made covers. Smooth them out, arrange them on your bed or sofa, and stand back to admire your beautiful, handmade Sunburst Pillows! This entire process, even moving at what I consider a “snail’s pace” and factoring in that hour of seam-ripping from a previous zipper attempt, took me approximately five hours. A small investment of time for such a rewarding outcome!
