Supplies Needed for Your Laundry Printables

Getting your beautiful new laundry printables ready for display is a simple process that requires just a few basic items. With these supplies, you’ll transform your digital files into tangible decor that adds both style and function to your laundry room.

  • Printable File(s) – The star of the show! You’ll be downloading our exclusive Laundry Symbols Printable, an invaluable visual guide to fabric care, and/or the charming Laundry Co. Printable, perfect for adding a touch of classic elegance. Having these files means you’re just a few clicks away from a more organized and stylish space.
  • Printer – A standard household printer is all you need. Whether it’s an inkjet or laser printer, most models are perfectly capable of producing high-quality prints for framing. For the best results, ensure your printer cartridges have sufficient ink and are printing clearly without streaks.
  • Cardstock – While regular printer paper will work, we highly recommend using cardstock for a more professional and durable finish. Cardstock, typically 65lb or 80lb weight, gives your printables a sturdy feel, prevents wrinkles, and makes them look more like a piece of art. If you’re planning to place the printable directly into a frame, regular paper is also acceptable, as the frame will provide the necessary support and protection.
  • Scissors or Paper Trimmer – Depending on your chosen frame size, you might need to trim the edges of your printable for a perfect fit. Scissors work fine for careful cuts, but a paper trimmer offers cleaner, straighter lines, which can make a noticeable difference in the final presentation. Measure twice, cut once!
  • Frame – This is where you can truly personalize your decor! Any size, style, or color frame will work beautifully. Consider the overall aesthetic of your laundry room: a rustic wooden frame for a farmhouse feel, a sleek metallic frame for a modern look, or a classic white frame for a bright, clean ambiance. Don’t be afraid to mix and match or choose a frame that complements existing elements in your space.

Step 1: Download Your PDF File(s). To access these fantastic free printables, simply enter your name and email address into the designated download box further down this page. Please note: for optimal performance and file compatibility, you’ll need to do this on a desktop or laptop computer. Our system is optimized for these devices, and downloads may not initiate correctly on tablets or mobile phones.

Step 2: Print Your Chosen Design(s). Open the downloaded PDF file on your computer. Before printing, double-check your printer settings. Ensure you select the correct paper size (typically 8.5×11 inches, letter size) and choose “fit to page” or “actual size” to prevent any cropping. If using cardstock, adjust your printer settings to reflect the heavier paper type for the best ink adhesion and print quality. You can print both the Laundry Symbols Printable and the Laundry Co. Printable, or just one – whatever suits your needs!

Step 3: Frame and Display. Carefully trim your printed design if necessary to fit your chosen frame. Place the printable neatly inside the frame, securing it as per your frame’s instructions. Now comes the fun part: displaying your new artwork! If you have a countertop in your laundry room, it’s a perfect spot to lean a framed printable. For those with limited counter space, hanging the sign is an excellent alternative. You’ll need a few basic tools like a hammer, a nail, and a level to ensure your framed art hangs straight and securely on the wall. Consider placing the Laundry Symbols Printable near your washing machine for easy reference, and the Laundry Co. sign in a prominent spot to enhance the room’s overall aesthetic.

What are the 5 basic laundry care symbols and why are they important?

Understanding laundry symbols is paramount for proper garment care, helping to extend the life of your clothes and prevent damage. Our Laundry Symbols Printable breaks these down visually, but here are the five basic categories:

  • Washing: Represented by a trapezoid-shaped tub with squiggly lines (water), this symbol indicates how an item should be washed. Dots inside indicate water temperature (one dot for cold, two for warm, three for hot), and lines underneath signify the wash cycle (no line for normal, one line for permanent press, two lines for delicate/gentle).
  • Bleaching: A simple triangle denotes bleaching instructions. An empty triangle means any bleach can be used. A triangle with two diagonal lines means non-chlorine bleach only, and a crossed-out triangle means no bleach at all.
  • Drying: A square symbol covers drying instructions. A circle inside the square indicates tumble drying (with dots for temperature, like washing). A single horizontal line means flat dry, and a curved line means hang to dry. A crossed-out square means do not tumble dry.
  • Ironing: An iron symbol guides your ironing process. Dots inside indicate the iron’s temperature setting (one dot for low, two for medium, three for high). A crossed-out iron means do not iron.
  • Professional Textile Care: A circle symbol advises on professional cleaning. Different letters inside the circle (e.g., P, F, W) specify the type of dry cleaning solvent or wet cleaning method required by professionals. A crossed-out circle means do not dry clean.
How to wash silk and other delicate fabrics?

Washing delicate fabrics like silk, lace, or specific blends might seem intimidating, but it’s often simpler than you think. Proper care ensures these treasured items last longer and maintain their luxurious feel. Here’s a detailed guide, perfect for silk:

  1. Prepare for Hand Washing: Silk is best hand-washed. Begin by filling a clean sink or basin with cool to lukewarm water. Avoid hot water as it can damage delicate fibers.
  2. Add Gentle Detergent: Place just a few drops of a mild, pH-neutral laundry detergent designed for delicates into the water. Agitate the water gently with your hands to dissolve the detergent and create a light sudsy mixture. Harsh detergents can strip silk’s natural proteins.
  3. Soak the Garment: Submerge your silk garment (or other delicate item) completely in the water. Ensure it’s fully saturated and free of air bubbles. Allow it to soak for a brief period, typically 3-5 minutes. Avoid prolonged soaking, especially for colored items, to prevent dye bleeding.
  4. Gentle Agitation & Rinse: Gently agitate the garment in the soapy water, squeezing the suds through the fabric without rubbing or twisting. Once clean, remove the item and rinse it thoroughly under cool, running water until all detergent residue is gone.
  5. Remove Excess Water (No Wringing!): This step is crucial for delicates. Do NOT wring or twist the garment, as this can stretch and damage the fibers. Instead, gently press the water out. Lay the item flat on a clean, dry towel. Roll the towel and garment together, pressing gently to absorb as much excess water as possible.
  6. Hang Dry: Unroll the towel and reshape your garment to its original form. Hang it to dry on a padded hanger or lay it flat on a clean, dry surface, away from direct sunlight or heat, which can fade or damage silk. Allow it to air dry completely.
What size are the printables and can I customize them?

Our printables are designed to fit standard letter-sized paper (8.5 x 11 inches), making them easy to print on most home printers. You can then trim them to fit various common frame sizes like 8×10 inches or 5×7 inches if desired. Currently, the printables are offered as-is and cannot be customized. However, their simple and elegant design is intended to complement a wide range of decor styles, allowing you to personalize their look through your choice of frame.

How can I make my laundry room more organized and efficient?

Beyond aesthetic improvements with printables, an efficient laundry room relies on smart organization. Consider adding shelves or wall-mounted cabinets for detergents and supplies, use stylish hampers for sorting, and install a drying rack for delicates. Clear containers for supplies not only look tidy but also help you see when you’re running low. A dedicated folding surface can also dramatically improve your workflow and prevent clothes from piling up.

Mastering Laundry: A Step-by-Step Guide for Every Home

A hand holding a clothing tag, with various laundry symbols visible, emphasizing the importance of reading care labels.

If you’re new to the world of laundry, or simply looking to refine your existing routine, the task can seem a bit overwhelming. But fear not! After more than 25 years of managing laundry for a busy household, I’ve honed a system that is both effective and relatively stress-free. I’m thrilled to share my step-by-step approach with you, designed to make laundry day less of a chore and more of a predictable, manageable part of your week.

  • SORT Your Laundry – The Foundation of Success: Before anything else, proper sorting is paramount. This crucial first step prevents color bleeding, protects delicate fabrics, and ensures each item gets the right kind of cleaning. I like to create dedicated piles on the floor of my laundry room (or in separate hampers). My sorting system typically includes:
    • Hand Wash / Delicate Washes: Items requiring the gentlest care, often made of silk, lace, or specific synthetic blends. These usually get a special cold-water cycle or hand wash.
    • Dry Cleaning Only: Clothes with specific “dry clean” symbols on their tags should be separated immediately for professional care.
    • Dark Colors: Jeans, dark shirts, black clothing, etc. Washing these in cold water helps prevent fading.
    • Whites: All white clothing, towels, and linens. These often benefit from hot water and can be brightened with bleach (if the fabric allows).
    • Reds/Pinks/Oranges: A specific pile for these vibrant colors helps prevent accidental color transfer to other items, especially lighter ones.
    • Mixed Colors / Lights: Lighter-colored items (blues, yellows, light greens) that aren’t pure white. Wash these in cool or warm water.
    • Towels: These tend to shed a lot of lint and are often very absorbent, so washing them separately prevents lint transfer and allows for a more robust wash cycle.
    • Bed Linens: Sheets, duvet covers, and pillowcases. These can be bulky and need a thorough wash for hygiene.
  • READ Clothing Tags – Your Garment’s Instruction Manual: This is arguably the most critical step and one that many people overlook. Before you start your first load, take a moment to read the care tags on any items you’re unsure about, especially new garments or those made from unfamiliar fabrics. Your Laundry Symbols Printable will be incredibly helpful here! Tags provide vital information on fabric composition, washing temperature, cycle type, drying method, and ironing instructions. Following these guidelines is key to preventing shrinkage, stretching, color fading, and overall damage to your clothes.
  • START the Wash – Selecting the Right Settings: Once sorted and tags checked, it’s time to load the machine. I usually begin with my white load, followed by reds/pinks/oranges, then mixed colors, and finally darks. If I have delicate items that require special care and will be air-dried (like my beloved Lilly Pulitzer pieces), I’ll wash them in between the whites and colors, adjusting the water temperature and cycle according to their specific needs.
    • Water Temperature: Hot water is great for whites and heavily soiled items (kills germs), warm water for most colored items, and cold water for darks, delicates, and energy saving.
    • Wash Cycle: Use ‘Normal’ for durable, everyday items; ‘Permanent Press’ for synthetic blends to minimize wrinkles; ‘Delicates’ or ‘Hand Wash’ for fragile garments; and ‘Heavy Duty’ for bulky, very dirty items like towels or work clothes.
    • Detergent & Additives: Add the appropriate amount of detergent based on load size and soil level. Consider adding fabric softener for a softer feel and fewer wrinkles, or a color-safe booster for stubborn stains or brightening.
  • DRY Your Clothes – Machine vs. Air Drying: After washing, it’s time to dry. Pay close attention to the drying symbols on your clothing tags.
    • Machine Drying: Load your dryer and choose the appropriate heat setting (high for towels/whites, medium for most clothes, low for delicates) and cycle. Don’t overload the dryer, as this can lead to uneven drying and more wrinkles. Clean the lint trap after every load to maintain efficiency and prevent fire hazards.
    • Air Drying: For delicates, items prone to shrinking, or to save energy, air drying is ideal. Use a drying rack or hang items on hangers. Reshape garments before hanging to help them maintain their form as they dry.
  • FOLD/HANG Immediately – Beat the Wrinkles: This is a game-changer! As soon as your clothes are dry, take them out of the dryer (or off the line) and immediately fold or hang them. This step is absolutely essential to prevent wrinkles, saving you precious time on ironing later. Develop a system for folding different types of garments – shirts, pants, towels – to keep them neat and compact.
  • PUT AWAY Promptly – The Final Hurdle: For many, myself included, putting away the clean laundry is the hardest part of the entire system. To avoid a massive pile of clean clothes accumulating, I try to put them away the minute I’ve folded or hung them. While this doesn’t always happen perfectly, making the effort greatly reduces laundry-related stress. Remember, even if you can’t put everything away at once, tackling a small portion is better than letting it all sit.

One of my biggest tips for managing laundry is to dedicate a specific day or two each week to the task. If we’re home on the weekend, I typically dedicate my Sundays to washing all our clothing. Mondays are then reserved for washing towels, sheets, and throw rugs. This structured system helps me stay on top of the laundry mountain. Once you get into a consistent groove, doing laundry will become second nature to you!

PRO TIP – Get the Kids Involved! If you have children, don’t hesitate to enlist their help! My kids started helping me sort clean clothing to be folded around ages 3-4, and were actively folding laundry by ages 4-5. Young children are often eager to learn and love to help with household tasks. Starting them young instills a sense of responsibility and teaches them valuable life skills. Before you know it, they’ll be laundry pros long before they graduate high school!
