We actually owned a condo here a few years ago, and the pull of the lake, its serene beauty, and the vibrant community was simply too strong to resist. We truly couldn’t stay away, and now we’re back, ready to infuse new life into our latest acquisition. Our new sanctuary is nestled in the charming town of Dadeville, Alabama, specifically within the picturesque community of Still Waters. This neighborhood is an absolute dream – with its lush landscapes, mature trees, well-maintained amenities, and direct access to the sparkling waters of Lake Martin. The moment we stepped into Still Waters, we knew this was where we wanted to create our next refreshing retreat. The community offers a perfect blend of tranquility and recreational opportunities, making it an ideal spot for a vacation home or a peaceful getaway. Even Murphy, our beloved canine companion, is all smiles when we’re at the lake, just like in the photo above! While the three-hour drive from our main residence isn’t her favorite part of the trip, her tail starts wagging uncontrollably the moment we arrive. The last item on that list perfectly encapsulates the reality of home renovations: one thing inevitably leads to another. They are one of the key features we absolutely adore and plan to highlight and preserve throughout the renovation process. While most of our immediate tasks are aesthetic – painting, updating fixtures, and bringing in new decor – some are absolutely vital for the long-term health and safety of the condo. We meticulously checked the age of key appliances upon purchase, and we know that the washing machine and dishwasher are as old as the condo itself. These two appliances are notorious sources of potential water leaks, which can lead to extensive and costly damage not only to our unit but also to neighboring units below. Proactive maintenance is key to avoiding headaches and costly repairs down the line.
Here’s a critical piece of advice for all condo owners: did you know that washing machine hoses often wear out from the inside? You might not see any external damage until it’s too late, resulting in a sudden, catastrophic leak. This is why replacing old rubber hoses with braided stainless steel lines is a smart, inexpensive upgrade that provides immense peace of mind. Furthermore, as a standard practice for safety and peace of mind, we make it a point to turn off the main water supply whenever we leave the condo for an extended period. This simple habit can prevent potential disasters and save you from unimaginable stress. Don’t forget to also turn off ice makers and water heaters, as these can also be sources of leaks when unattended. These small, proactive steps are invaluable for protecting your investment, adhering to condo association rules, and maintaining good neighborly relations.

As soon as we closed on the condo, we rushed in to capture some “before” photos. These aren’t staged, picture-perfect shots; they’re raw, authentic glimpses of the space as it was when we took possession. They truly set the stage for the dramatic transformation that’s about to unfold. We believe it’s important to document the starting point to truly appreciate the “after” and understand the journey taken. These initial images highlight the challenges we faced, but also the immense potential we saw in this lakeside property.
We estimate that these condos were built around 2007. At that time, a very popular paint color was “Tobacco Road,” a warm, golden-beige hue that graced countless homes. I confess, I even had it in my own home at one point! However, interior design trends evolve, and I can confidently say that I am completely “over” those deep gold tones now. They tend to absorb light and can make a space feel dated and heavy, especially in a lake home where you want to maximize brightness and a sense of openness. Our vision for this condo was to create an inviting, airy atmosphere that complements the natural beauty outside, moving away from anything that would dim its potential.

You might have noticed on my checklist that one of the first and most impactful changes we made was painting everything. We chose Sherwin Williams Alabaster, a beautiful, soft off-white, for all the walls, trim, and cabinets. It has quickly become a modern classic for a reason, offering a clean canvas that allows other design elements to truly shine. Finally, the cabinets received a semi-gloss finish, which is highly durable, easy to wipe down, and adds a touch of luminosity, reflecting light to make the kitchen and bathroom areas feel more expansive and modern. The transformation simply by changing the paint is truly remarkable, instantly brightening and updating the entire condo, setting the stage for everything else to come.
LAKE MARTIN CONDO – BEFORE & DURING REFRESH: A Visual Journey

The combination of changing out old, warm-toned light bulbs for bright daylight LED bulbs and coating the walls in Sherwin Williams Alabaster has already transformed the space into a light and bright haven. The difference is truly astounding; what was once a somewhat dark and enclosed space now feels expansive, inviting, and full of natural light. This immediate shift proves that sometimes the simplest changes can make the biggest difference in a home makeover.

With our fresh, neutral canvas established, my next step is to introduce vibrant pops of color throughout the condo, focusing primarily on various shades of blue.
