The holiday season is undeniably my favorite time of year, and I’ve poured my heart into decorating every corner of the house. Starting before Thanksgiving was a brilliant move, though I might need to recruit some help to put all these decorations away when the season ends! Discovering Hidden Holiday Gems: Unseen Christmas Rooms
Today, I’m excited to share three festive rooms that are making their debut in our Christmas home tour. These spaces have been newly decorated for the holidays, and I can’t wait for you to see them! As you explore my home, please remember that I am a proud thrifty decorator. Many of my cherished pieces have been collected over decades, discovered at charming yard sales, or found at local thrift stores. This approach allows me to create a unique and personal holiday atmosphere without breaking the bank, proving that beautiful decor can be both stylish and budget-friendly.
The Heart of the Home: A Festive Kitchen and Dining Area
They say the kitchen is the true heart of any home, and while my kitchen is currently undergoing a small facelift, I’m delighted to showcase the rooms closest to it. This interconnected three-room space—comprising the kitchen dining area and the cozy keeping room—is where you’ll find our family most of the time. It’s a lively hub, especially during the holidays, filled with laughter, delicious aromas, and, of course, charming Christmas decor.
From our kitchen table, you get a lovely view of the Christmas tree, sparkling with its aqua and turquoise ornaments, harmonizing beautifully with the red accents throughout the space.
A Symphony of Red and Blue: Kitchen Dining Decor
In both the kitchen dining area and the adjacent keeping room, I’ve thoughtfully blended classic Christmas reds with serene blues and turquoises. For the centerpiece on our dining table, I opted for simple elegance. A chic silver container, a fabulous find from HomeGoods, perfectly holds a fresh bouquet of grocery store flowers from Trader Joe’s. To complete the look, I added clippings of fragrant evergreen from our own yard, bringing a touch of natural beauty indoors. It’s a testament to how easily you can create a stunning holiday focal point with everyday items and a little creativity.
One of my favorite, budget-friendly additions this year has been the simple wreaths I purchased from Walmart for just $2.99 each. My initial plan was to hang them solely on the windows in this area. However, once I saw how charming they looked, I absolutely fell in love with their understated elegance. This led to a spontaneous decision to hang them in other rooms, including our Master Bedroom, adding a cohesive festive touch throughout the house. Hanging them was a breeze – a simple DIY involving three pieces of ribbon cut to the same length, secured with a tack into the window molding. It’s amazing how such a small, inexpensive detail can make such a significant impact on holiday cheer.
I often receive questions about the chairs around our kitchen table, and I’m always happy to share their story. I purchased them about 15 years ago from a Riverside furniture outlet, and I’m unsure if that particular store is still in business today. Nevertheless, they have served us incredibly well, standing the test of time and countless family meals. The table itself is another one of my cherished thrift store finds. I gave it a fresh look by staining it black, a simple DIY project that completely transformed its appearance. The Cozy Keeping Room: Our Family’s Christmas Sanctuary
Adjacent to the kitchen and dining area is our beloved Keeping Room, also known as the Family Room. This is one of our absolute favorite spots to unwind and connect. With its inviting, comfy seating and a warm, crackling fireplace, it’s no wonder you can always find us lounging here, especially during the colder months and the festive holiday season. It’s the perfect backdrop for cozy Christmas evenings, reading by the fire, or enjoying a cup of hot cocoa with loved ones.
The centerpiece of our Keeping Room is undoubtedly the stone fireplace, which I’ve adorned with a delightful array of holiday decorations. On the mantel, I’ve artfully arranged rustic antlers, playful deer figurines, and a variety of lush greenery, creating a rich texture and natural feel. The large mirror above the mantel is a permanent fixture in this room, but for Christmas, I simply “popped” this beautiful silver and gold wreath in its center, instantly transforming it into a festive focal point. The combination of natural elements with shimmering metallic accents truly captures the spirit of the season.
Connecting the kitchen dining area and the Keeping Room is this versatile buffet. It serves as an excellent additional surface for holiday entertaining, whether it’s holding treats or displaying cherished decorations. One of my favorite DIY projects, a charming vintage wood rocking horse makeover, takes pride of place here. It’s a wonderful example of how upcycling can bring new life and character to old pieces, making them perfect additions to your festive decor.
Our comfortable ottoman, a fantastic find from Cost Plus World Market, is a true favorite. It’s incredibly versatile and adds a touch of relaxed sophistication to the room. To infuse more Christmas spirit and introduce texture, I took last year’s festive plaid scarves and ingeniously tied them around our throw pillows. This simple, budget-friendly Christmas decor idea instantly updated the seating, adding warmth and a playful pop of color that perfectly aligns with our red and blue theme.
Speaking of charming details, I simply adore these “Jingle” and “Merry” cups. They’re so utterly festive that I often leave them sitting around, even when empty, as part of the decor. Of course, they’re perfectly functional too; I occasionally fill them with a warm cup of coffee or a comforting hot chocolate, adding to the delightful holiday ambiance.
Tranquil Tidings: Our Festive First Floor Guest Room
Our first-floor guest room recently received a wonderful makeover just a few months ago, and for the holidays, I’ve chosen to keep the decor simple and serene. I truly believe that “less is more” when creating a restful and welcoming space, especially in bedrooms. It allows guests to relax and feel at home without being overwhelmed. You’ll spot some of these charming Target banners throughout the house – I confess, I have a serious weakness for the Dollar Spot! They offer fantastic, affordable ways to add seasonal cheer.
Adding to the room’s cozy appeal is a wonderfully soft, big yarn fluffy throw, a luxurious find from the Pottery Barn outlet. Its plush texture invites relaxation and warmth. Another delightful discovery is the awesome chalkboard-looking pillow I found at HomeGoods, which adds a touch of personalized charm and character to the bed. Together, these elements create a tranquil yet festive haven, perfect for welcoming holiday visitors and ensuring they have a peaceful and comfortable stay.
