My Personal Organizing Journey: Office and Craft Storage Revamp
For this year’s challenge, I’m focusing on two crucial areas that are currently overflowing with creative chaos: my home office and my craft storage zone, which is located in the garage. While the garage itself is a monumental undertaking, I’m strategically postponing that beast of a project for another time. (My husband might be a tad disappointed by that decision, but focus is key!) These two areas are central to my creative and professional life, and getting them organized will significantly impact my productivity and peace of mind.
Before we dive into the (admittedly dishevelled) reality of my current spaces, let’s talk strategy. A successful organizing project begins with a clear plan and the right mindset. Preparing adequately can make all the difference between feeling overwhelmed and feeling empowered.
Essential Tips for a Successful Decluttering Challenge
Transforming a cluttered space into an organized sanctuary can seem daunting, but with a structured approach, it becomes an achievable and even enjoyable process. Here are some tried-and-true tips to guide you through your organizing journey:
My Week 1 Action Plan: Laying the Foundation for Organization
- Dress for Success (and Comfort): Slip into your most comfortable attire – think yoga pants and cozy shoes. While it might sound trivial, comfort allows you to move freely, bend, lift, and stay focused on the task at hand without distraction. This isn’t a fashion show; it’s an active undertaking!
- Allocate Dedicated Time: Schedule specific, uninterrupted blocks of time for your decluttering efforts. Whether it’s a full day, several concentrated hours, or even a series of shorter sessions, commit to it. Avoid scheduling other appointments or tasks during these times to ensure you can fully immerse yourself in the purge. This commitment prevents interruptions and helps build momentum.
- Gather All Necessary Supplies: Before you even begin, collect all your tools. Having everything within reach eliminates pauses and keeps you productive. We’ll detail specific supplies below, but a quick preliminary sweep for boxes, bags, and markers is always a good start.
- Make Swift Decisions: Adopt a decisive mindset. When evaluating each item, make a quick decision: Keep, Toss, Donate, or Sell. Avoid overthinking or sentimental traps. If you haven’t used an item in a year (or even six months for certain categories), it’s a strong candidate for letting go. Stick to your initial gut feeling to maintain momentum.
- Maintain Momentum: Keep moving! Once you start, try to stay in motion. Pausing for long breaks can break your focus and make it harder to restart. Put on some energizing music, set a timer, and work through sections systematically. Remember, even small bursts of focused effort accumulate into significant progress.
Essential Supplies for Your Organizing Journey
Having the right tools at your disposal will streamline your decluttering process and make it far more efficient. Here’s a detailed list of supplies you’ll want to gather:
- Boxes and Large Garbage Bags: These are your primary sorting vessels. Clearly label each one immediately with categories such as “Keep,” “Toss,” “Donate,” or “Sell.” This prevents confusion and ensures items go to their intended destination. For “Keep” items, consider smaller boxes for specific categories to facilitate easy relocation later.
- Markers: Essential for labeling your boxes and bags clearly and boldly. Different colors can even be used to visually distinguish categories at a glance.
- Donation Forms/Receipts: If you plan to donate items to charity, having forms ready will simplify tracking for tax purposes. Many charitable organizations offer printable receipts on their websites.
- Scissors/Utility Knife: Useful for breaking down cardboard boxes, opening sealed packages, or cutting away any lingering tags or packaging.
- Large Bottle of Water, Coffee, or Tea: Staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining energy and focus during a physical and mentally demanding task. While wine might sound appealing, it’s best to save it for celebration *after* the work is done; its relaxing effects can inadvertently convince you that “everything looks fine as it is,” hindering progress!
- Cleaning Supplies: Once an area is decluttered, you’ll want to wipe down surfaces, shelves, and drawers before putting “keep” items back. Dust cloths, all-purpose cleaner, and perhaps a small vacuum will be invaluable.
- Labels and Label Maker: For the “keep” items, especially those going into storage containers or new homes, clear labels are key to maintaining long-term organization.
- Music or Podcast: Curate a playlist or select an engaging podcast to keep your spirits high and make the process more enjoyable.
With these supplies in hand and a solid plan, you’re ready to tackle the clutter head-on! Remember the mantra: use it, love it, or let it go!
Simplify Your Donations with Our Printable Sheet
To further assist you, I’ve created a handy printable donation list. You can print it off and attach it to a clipboard, making it easy to track items as you fill up your donation boxes or bags. This helps you keep an inventory of what you’re donating, which is incredibly useful for tax deductions and simply understanding what you’re letting go of. I personally found this sheet invaluable when I undertook a major closet organizing project – it truly helped me streamline the process and make informed decisions, leading to a closet organizing miracle! 😉

My “Before” Spaces: A Glimpse into the Chaos
My Home Office: The Hub of Blogging & Creative Work
This is where the magic (and sometimes the mess) happens – my blogging sanctuary. These photos, taken just yesterday, are a true reflection of its current state. My office has, regrettably, become the ultimate “drop zone.” It’s where anything I don’t immediately want to put away, or items I *think* I might need in the coming days, inevitably land. Days turn into weeks, and weeks into months, creating layers of forgotten necessities and creative clutter. This is a classic example of what happens when items lack a designated home; they end up anywhere and everywhere, hindering productivity and sparking unnecessary stress.

Beyond blogging essentials, this space also serves as an impromptu storage area for extra furniture, various boxes, photography props, and decorative pillows. My attempt to “fancy it up” by hanging a mirror clearly didn’t deter the accumulating clutter. My goal is to transform this area into a highly functional, inspiring, and organized workspace that truly supports my creative endeavors.

Garage Craft Storage Area: A Creative Hoarder’s Haven
Please don’t let these images define me! It’s important to remember that nobody is perfect, and clearly, I am not always perfectly organized. If you’re looking at your own messy spaces and feeling overwhelmed, know that you are absolutely not alone. In fact, I might just be a step or two “worse” than you right now, which is precisely why this challenge is so motivating. My hope is that by sharing our struggles and successes, we can all uplift and help each other achieve our organizing goals. Fellow creative bloggers, you know this struggle intimately – the sheer volume of supplies, the “just in case” items, and the ever-expanding collection of potential projects!

That large roll you see isn’t toilet paper, but rather a colossal roll of stickers – a purchase I likely made with grand plans that never materialized. It’s a prime example of an item that needs to be donated to someone who will actually use and appreciate it!

There’s undoubtedly some truly awesome stuff hidden within this disarray, but truthfully, I have no idea what half of it is! That’s the tell-tale sign of a space that desperately needs a system. My final reveal post, showcasing the transformed spaces, will go live on January 30 at 8 am EST. Be sure to check back to see the incredible transformation!
