An Unforgettable Design Opportunity: The La-Z-Boy Design Dash

The world of blogging has opened up a remarkable array of opportunities, and I am incredibly grateful for each one. Among these, an invitation from La-Z-Boy stands out as one of the most exciting and significant collaborations to date! A few months ago, I received an email that sparked immense excitement, inviting me to participate in their prestigious Design Dash event. The challenge was captivating: design a custom sofa, then travel to High Point, NC, the heart of the furniture industry, to craft an entire room around it. My initial decision was bold – I designed a striking turquoise sofa. Immediately after, a wave of exhilarating panic set in: could I truly design a cohesive and stunning room around such a vibrant centerpiece?

Introducing the Star: My Custom Turquoise La-Z-Boy Sofa

And here it is, in all its glory – the magnificent La-Z-Boy sofa, elegantly upholstered in a beautiful turquoise fabric! It truly stood out, even alone in the room, radiating an undeniable charm. Its vibrant hue and sophisticated design made it a winner all by itself, almost as if it didn’t need any additional elements to make a statement. However, the task at hand was to create a complete and inviting living space that not only complemented but enhanced its unique character.

The choice of turquoise was intentional. I wanted a color that felt fresh, inviting, and a little unexpected, yet versatile enough to blend with a variety of styles and textures. This particular shade of turquoise is not only cheerful but also sophisticated, capable of anchoring a room with a contemporary flair or adding a pop of color to a more traditional setting. The fabric’s texture added another layer of depth, ensuring that the sofa wasn’t just visually striking but also incredibly comfortable and tactile. It was designed to be the heart of the room, a piece that draws you in and promises relaxation.

The 60-Minute Design Dash Challenge: High Stakes in High Point

Despite how fantastic the sofa looked on its own, the incredible team at La-Z-Boy set the stage for the ultimate design challenge. I was given precisely 60 minutes to select all the accessories, accent furniture, and complementary pieces needed to transform an empty space into a fully realized room. Imagine the thrill, the pressure, and the sheer joy! Navigating through their expansive showroom, filled with an astonishing array of furniture and decor, felt like being a kid in a candy store – with a ticking clock.

The biggest hurdle? All I had was a photo of my turquoise sofa and absolutely no prior glimpse of the actual room I’d be designing. This meant every decision had to be made on instinct and a deep understanding of design principles. How do you create a harmonious space without seeing it? It required visualizing the potential, understanding how different textures and finishes would interact, and making quick, confident choices. The adrenaline was palpable, and every second counted as I raced against time to gather the perfect elements. This was not just about picking pretty things; it was about strategic selection to achieve a specific aesthetic and functional goal within an incredibly tight timeframe.

From Vision to Reality: Crafting a Dream Living Space

A Welcoming Sanctuary: The Final Room Reveal

Just like that, after arriving on Wednesday, by Thursday afternoon, my vision had materialized. The once-empty room now felt like a complete, inviting sanctuary. It was exactly how I wanted it to feel – a place I could happily live in, a space that truly resonated with warmth and style. The goal was to create an environment that felt both sophisticated and incredibly comfortable, a true reflection of modern living.

Harmonious Blends: Mixing Textures and Finishes

One of the key elements in achieving this cohesive look was the thoughtful mix of painted and stained wood pieces. I deliberately selected items from two different La-Z-Boy collections, demonstrating how diverse styles can come together beautifully when chosen with care. The rich stained finish of the coffee table beautifully complemented the elegant painted finish of the bookcase. Can we take a moment to appreciate that magnificent bookcase? It was absolutely beautiful, a true showstopper. You can’t fully appreciate it from this distance, but the glass in its doors is subtly wavy, adding a unique, artisanal touch that makes it truly exceptional.

Comfort and Style: Every Piece Tells a Story

The turquoise sofa, naturally, remains the cheerful focal point of the room. It genuinely smiles at you as you walk in, exuding an inviting energy. Its integrated chaise lounge beckons you to unwind, practically saying, “Have a seat; you’ve had a long day.” Flanking it, the accent chair, a versatile swivel rocker, does not disappoint. It offers both comfort and functionality, allowing for easy conversation or a quiet moment of relaxation. These pieces together create an ideal environment for both entertaining and personal downtime.

Beyond the major furniture, I meticulously selected accessories to tie the room together. A carefully chosen area rug grounded the space, adding texture and a subtle pattern that harmonized with the sofa’s bold color. Cushions and throws introduced additional layers of comfort and visual interest, while well-placed lamps provided ambient lighting, creating a cozy atmosphere. Artwork on the walls and carefully curated decorative objects completed the look, ensuring that every corner of the room felt intentional and thoughtfully designed. Behind the Scenes: The Excitement of the La-Z-Boy Design Dash Event

The Design Dash was more than just a competition; it was an incredible experience filled with camaraderie and shared passion for design. That’s me on the right, towards the end of the line, standing next to the wonderful Kelly Edwards! She is an absolute sweetheart and such an inspiring personality, making the entire event even more special.

Here, Kelly is enthusiastically cheering us on, just moments before we were about to burst through that ribbon and embark on our frantic search for the perfect furniture pieces. It truly felt like running for our lives, or more accurately, running for fabulous furniture! The energy was exhilarating, a mix of nervous anticipation and pure excitement. I must admit, I discovered that Miss Mustard Seed brought a surprisingly competitive edge to the dash, which only added to the fun!

I’ve never experienced so many cameras around me; I truly felt like a (slightly sweaty) celebrity for the day! The atmosphere was vibrant, with designers discussing ideas, photographers capturing every moment, and the collective energy of creation buzzing through the air. It was a whirlwind of inspiration and focused effort, all culminating in the creation of unique, personalized spaces.
