Transforming Our Garage into a Dream Farmhouse Cottage: A Step-by-Step Renovation Journey
When we first laid eyes on this charming property, among its many endearing qualities, one feature truly stood out: the presence of two spacious two-car garages. What immediately captured my imagination was the fact that one of these garages already boasted a rudimentary kitchen area. My mind instantly began to wander, envisioning endless possibilities, and before long, a clear picture emerged – transforming that very garage into a cozy, inviting farmhouse cottage. Yes, that dream is now becoming a reality, and we are thrilled to share every step of this exciting home renovation journey with you.
The Vision Unveiled: Crafting the Farmhouse Aesthetic
The concept for our farmhouse cottage revolves around a timeless, comfortable aesthetic. For those familiar with my style, you know my preference for neutral color palettes. These provide a serene backdrop, allowing for pops of color and personality to be introduced through carefully selected accessories and decor. Our goal is to create a space that feels both rustic and refined, a true sanctuary with all the modern comforts. We’ve meticulously curated a mood board to guide our design decisions, ensuring every element contributes to the overarching farmhouse charm.

Vinyl plank flooring is incredibly resilient, easy to maintain, and perfect for creating that warm, inviting farmhouse feel.
- Dinnerware/Glasses: While the core palette remains neutral, we’re adding vibrant touches with accessories. For instance, similar to these, we’ve selected Aqua Dinnerware and Aqua Glasses to bring a refreshing burst of color to the kitchen and dining area.
- Plywood for Faux Shiplap: To achieve that quintessential farmhouse look, we’re incorporating faux shiplap. Plywood offers an affordable yet authentic way to create this textured wall treatment, adding character and a rustic touch to the cottage’s interior walls.
- Paint: The interior walls, ceiling, and trim will be painted with Sherwin Williams Alabaster. This classic, soft white shade is a cornerstone of farmhouse design, creating a bright, airy, and expansive feel. For the exterior doors, we opted for Sherwin Williams Watery, a soothing blue-green that will provide a subtle pop of color and curb appeal.
- Fixture: Lighting is key to setting the mood. We’ve chosen an Industrial Lamp from Antique Farmhouse, which perfectly blends rustic charm with an industrial edge, fitting seamlessly into our modern farmhouse aesthetic.
- Keurig: For everyday convenience in the kitchen, a Keurig K250 Coffee Maker is a must-have, providing quick and easy coffee preparation for residents and guests alike.
- Tile: The backsplash will feature Aspect Peel & Stick Glass Tile in Morning Dew. This peel-and-stick option offers ease of installation while providing a sophisticated, light-reflecting surface that enhances the kitchen’s brightness and adds a touch of subtle elegance.
- Range: A reliable and functional kitchen is paramount. We’ve selected the Whirlpool Smooth Surface Freestanding Electric Range, combining modern efficiency with a sleek design.
- Refrigerator: Completing the kitchen appliances, the Whirlpool 21.2 cu. ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator in monochromatic stainless steel offers ample storage and a contemporary look that complements the farmhouse style without overwhelming it.
From Sketch to Reality: The Design and Planning Process
Transforming a garage into a habitable living space requires meticulous planning and expert input. While the project is still a work in progress, the initial design phase has been completed. After consulting with our trusted contractor, we received the first set of plans that brought our vision closer to fruition.
While the contractor’s initial drawings provided an excellent foundation, I felt a strong need to ensure the cottage would offer ample and comfortable living space. This led me to make a few personal tweaks to the layout, optimizing the flow and functionality of the interior. The revised plans reflect a more expansive living area, making the most of every square foot available in this small home design.
A Look Back: The Garage “Before” Photos
To truly appreciate the transformation, it’s essential to see where we started. These photos capture our initial visit to the property, showcasing the raw potential of the garage space that is now being converted into a charming farmhouse guest house or in-law suite.
The two-car garage on the right side of the property is the focus of our conversion. This section will be meticulously transformed into a functional and aesthetically pleasing farmhouse cottage, spanning over 500 square feet. This leaves the adjacent one-car garage intact for its original purpose, providing ample storage and utility space. The area directly above the converted garage will be cleverly utilized to house essential utilities, including the air conditioning unit, hot water heater, and additional storage, maximizing every inch of available space.
Here’s another perspective, offering a side view of the building, which will soon feature a welcoming porch leading into the cottage.
Stepping inside, you can see the initial state of what will become the heart of our cottage – the kitchen and living area. This space, though currently raw and utilitarian, holds immense promise for transformation.
The existing desk cabinet and all upper cabinets will be removed, making way for open shelving to the right of the sink. This design choice will create a more open, airy feel characteristic of farmhouse kitchens, perfect for displaying decorative items and easy access to essentials. Currently, all the walls and ceiling were covered with plywood, contributing to a somewhat dark and uninviting atmosphere. But even in its raw state, our furry friend Murphy doesn’t seem to mind plopping down and making himself at home, a testament to the inherent comfort we hope to bring to this space.
To further enhance the living room’s spaciousness, a portion of the cabinet to the left of the sink will be removed. The pantry will also be relocated to a more functional area, optimizing the layout and ensuring a seamless flow between the kitchen and living spaces. These strategic changes are all part of our commitment to creating a highly functional yet aesthetically pleasing small living space.
The Renovation Blueprint: Bringing the Cottage to Life
Converting a garage into a cozy living space is a multi-faceted project, involving several critical stages. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the essential tasks on our renovation checklist:
- Remove Plywood, Add Drywall: The initial step involves stripping away the old plywood walls and replacing them with drywall. This is crucial for creating a finished, insulated, and aesthetically pleasing interior. Drywall provides a smooth surface for painting and improves thermal insulation and soundproofing, transforming the garage into a comfortable living environment.
- Remove and Shorten One Wall: To achieve the desired open concept and maximize living space, one wall will be strategically removed and another shortened. This modification will help create a more fluid transition between the kitchen and living areas, making the cottage feel larger and more inviting, aligning with our revised floor plan.
- Raise the Garage Floor, Pour Concrete: A key aspect of converting a garage is addressing the floor level. The existing garage floor will be raised by 6 inches with a concrete pour to bring it level with the adjacent kitchen area. This not only ensures a consistent floor height throughout the cottage but also allows for proper insulation and a vapor barrier underneath, preventing moisture issues and enhancing comfort.
- Plumbing & Electrical: Extensive plumbing and electrical work are required to transform this utility space into a fully functional home. This includes installing new wiring for can lights throughout the cottage, adding an exterior flood light for security, setting up the AC/Heat system for year-round comfort, and installing a hot water heater to provide essential hot water for the kitchen and future bathroom.
- Flooring Installation: Once the structural work is complete and the subfloor is ready, the Nova Floor Lyndon vinyl tile will be meticulously installed. This durable and beautiful flooring choice will tie the entire space together, offering a consistent and appealing surface that stands up to daily life while exuding farmhouse charm.
- Light Fixtures: Beyond the industrial lamp in the kitchen, various light fixtures will be installed throughout the cottage. These include ambient lighting, task lighting in specific areas, and accent lighting to highlight architectural features, all contributing to a warm and well-lit atmosphere.
- New Doors and Add 2 Windows: Enhancing natural light and ventilation is paramount. We will install new, energy-efficient doors, including an entry door and possibly an interior door for a private bedroom space. Additionally, two new windows will be added, strategically placed to bring in maximum natural light and offer views of the surrounding property, further blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living.
