Like many homes, my laundry room was once a purely functional space, utterly devoid of personality or warmth. The walls were bare, echoing emptiness, and there wasn’t a single bit of character anywhere to be seen. It felt less like a welcoming part of my home and more like a stark, utilitarian closet. I knew it deserved better, and I was determined to infuse some charm and visual interest without breaking the bank. This desire for an inspiring yet budget-friendly makeover led me to discover the magic of simple craft store letters and a little bit of metallic spray paint. The result? A stunning Anthropologie-inspired wall art display that was not only incredibly easy to create but also incredibly affordable.

The allure of Anthropologie lies in its curated, artisanal feel—pieces that often appear as if they’ve been discovered in a quaint European market or lovingly handcrafted. My goal was to capture that unique essence, particularly the distressed metallic accents frequently seen in their home decor collections, and recreate it in a way that anyone, regardless of their crafting experience, could achieve. This project isn’t merely about making decorative letters; it’s about adding a touch of personalized elegance, a story, and a conversation starter to your home. It’s about proving that beautiful, impactful home decor doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag.

One of the most appealing aspects of this DIY is how few materials you need and how readily available they are. You won’t be hunting for obscure supplies; everything can be found at your local craft or hardware store. Here’s a detailed list of what you’ll need to get started on your own distressed metallic letters:

• Plain Cardboard Letters: These are the foundation of our project. I found mine at Hobby Lobby for an incredible $2.50 a piece. Craft stores like Michaels, Joann, or even larger retailers often carry these. They come in various sizes, fonts, and thicknesses, allowing for full customization. When selecting your letters, consider the word or phrase you want to spell out (e.g., “LAUNDRY,” “WASH,” “DRY,” “HOME,” or an inspirational word like “CREATE” for a craft room). Think about the overall visual impact and how the font style will complement your existing decor.
• Metallic Spray Paint: Krylon metallic spray paint was my weapon of choice due to its excellent coverage and rich finish. The key here is to choose a high-quality metallic finish that truly mimics aged metal. Options like antique bronze, hammered silver, oil-rubbed bronze, or even a deep copper can deliver that sophisticated, industrial-chic look. Read reviews and look at swatches to ensure the metallic effect is what you envision.
• Fine-Grit Sandpaper: This is essential for achieving that perfectly imperfect distressed finish. A fine-grit sandpaper (typically around 180-220 grit) will allow you to gently wear away layers of paint without damaging the cardboard underneath, creating realistic scuffs and highlights.
• Command Strips: These are absolute lifesavers for hanging lightweight decor without drilling holes, hammering nails, or causing any damage to your walls. They make installation quick, easy, and renter-friendly, allowing for easy repositioning if you change your mind about the layout.
• Optional: Drop Cloth or Newspaper: Crucial for protecting your work surface and the surrounding area from overspray. Always craft in a designated, protected zone.
• Optional: Clear Sealant Spray (Matte or Satin Finish): For added durability and protection. If your letters will be in a high-traffic area, exposed to moisture (like a laundry room or bathroom), or simply need extra longevity, a clear sealant will protect the metallic finish and prevent scuffs.

I started with plain cardboard letters from Hobby Lobby at $2.50 a piece.

This project is incredibly forgiving and requires no prior crafting experience. Just follow these simple steps, and you’ll have beautiful, bespoke wall art that looks like it came straight from a high-end boutique:

1. Preparation is Paramount: Setting Up Your Workspace

   Before you even think about picking up that spray paint can, ensure you have a well-ventilated area. Working outdoors is ideal, or in a garage with the door open, to ensure proper airflow and minimize fume inhalation. Lay down a drop cloth, old newspapers, or cardboard to meticulously protect your work surfaces and any nearby items from overspray. Make sure your cardboard letters are clean, dry, and free of any dust or debris. If they have any slightly rough edges from manufacturing, a quick, light sanding can smooth those out for a more professional finish.

2. The Magic of Metallic Paint: Applying the Base Coat

   Now for the exciting part! Shake your metallic spray paint can vigorously for at least a minute to ensure the pigment is thoroughly mixed and will apply evenly. Hold the can about 8-12 inches away from the letters and apply the paint in thin, consistent coats. It is always, always better to apply multiple thin coats rather than one thick coat, which can lead to unsightly drips, uneven coverage, and a longer drying time. Allow each coat to dry completely to the touch (usually 10-15 minutes, but always check your specific can’s instructions) before applying the next. Rotate the letters as you go to ensure all sides, edges, and crevices are thoroughly covered. Aim for full, rich metallic coverage that truly gleams.

Then, painted them using this metallic Krylon spray paint.

3. Embrace the Imperfection: The Distressing Process

   Once your paint is completely dry—and I mean completely dry (give it at least an hour, or even better, overnight for a hard cure)—it’s time to add that authentic “distressed” element that gives these letters their undeniable Anthropologie charm. Take your fine-grit sandpaper and gently, deliberately sand the edges, corners, and any raised areas of the letters. The goal isn’t to remove all the paint but to create subtle wear marks and scuffs, strategically revealing hints of the natural cardboard color underneath. This technique makes the letters appear aged, well-loved, and gives them a unique vintage character. Experiment with the pressure you apply; a lighter touch will create faint, delicate scuffs, while a bit more pressure will expose more of the natural cardboard, creating a more pronounced aged effect. Step back frequently to assess your progress and ensure you achieve a consistent, beautiful distressed look across all your letters.

Lastly, I sanded them a bit to take the shine out and create that perfect distressed look.

4. Seal the Deal (Optional but Highly Recommended)

   If you opt for a clear sealant (which I highly recommend for longevity), apply it in thin, even coats, just like you did with the spray paint. A matte or satin finish clear coat will help maintain the authentic distressed look while providing an essential extra layer of protection against dust, moisture, and minor scuffs. This step is particularly beneficial if your letters will be placed in a high-traffic area or a humid environment like a laundry room or bathroom.

5. Effortless Hanging: Command Strips to the Rescue!

   And, what’s best of all, the letters are so wonderfully lightweight that all you need to hang them securely are Command strips! These ingenious adhesive strips allow you to mount your beautiful new decor without drilling holes, hammering nails, or causing any wall damage. Simply follow the instructions on the Command strip packaging: clean the back of your letter and the wall surface with rubbing alcohol, apply the strips firmly, and press the letter onto the wall. Before sticking them permanently, I always recommend planning your arrangement on the floor first. This allows you to visualize the spacing and alignment, ensuring you get it just right before committing to the wall. This flexibility makes it incredibly easy to reposition your letters if you ever want to change your decor or move them to a new room!

What’d I tell you? Easy, right? The transformation in my laundry room was immediate and truly impactful. These distressed metallic letters added the much-needed character, charm, and visual interest I was craving, effectively turning a mundane utility space into one that feels intentional, stylish, and welcoming.
