My Creative Journey: Insights from the Blogland Tour

As a wonderful part of this Blogland Tour, I have the opportunity to answer a few thought-provoking questions about my work, my process, and my passion for creativity. Let’s dive in!

1. What Exciting Projects Am I Currently Working On?

Oh, there are definitely several irons in the fire right now, to use an old saying! You might just be hearing it here first: a major life event is underway for my family and me – we are moving! This monumental undertaking means my current focus is on a massive decluttering and purging effort. I’ve made a solemn promise to Barry (my husband!) that I will not acquire another single item for our new home that I don’t absolutely need or can’t immediately use. This commitment is certainly putting my thrifting impulses to the test!

However, my promise didn’t extend to finding unique treasures for my children and their homes, did it? 😉 So, while I’m streamlining my own inventory, I recently completed this delightful Vintage Inspired Poster, which I’m confident will find a perfect spot in one of their spaces. It was a joy to create and a perfect example of how inspiration can strike even amidst chaos.

This week holds even more excitement as I’m headed out of town for an incredibly fun blogging gig! I can barely contain my enthusiasm. Looking ahead, later this month, I’m thrilled to be experimenting with a new Maison Blanche outdoor paint. I’ve heard wonderful things, and I’m eager to try it out on a project and report back to you with my honest review. 2. How Does My Work Differ from Others in Its Genre?

I believe every furniture artist, every DIY enthusiast, brings their unique flair and perspective to their work. For me, my approach is wonderfully straightforward: I simply open a can of paint and begin. There’s an intuitive flow to my process; I don’t stop until I truly love the transformation that has taken place. It’s a very organic, less prescriptive method, allowing for discovery and evolution as the project unfolds.

Sometimes, that means embracing bold geometric patterns and adding crisp stripes:

Other times, the project calls for a rustic, time-worn aesthetic, so I’ll distress the paint to reveal layers of character. Sometimes I opt for rich, deep stains to highlight the natural beauty of the wood. And sometimes, it’s a combination of techniques, a playful experimentation that leads to an unexpected and delightful result. 3. Why Do I Write and Create What I Do?

Honestly, the idea of sharing my hobby with the world through a blog never initially crossed my mind. It was actually my son who planted that seed. He believed that others would be inspired and motivated by the “crazy things” I love to do – transforming forgotten pieces, tackling creative projects, and bringing new life into our home. I truly hope he was right. Looking back, it’s been an incredible journey of learning and growth. I started with absolutely no knowledge of blogging or WordPress. Fast forward to today, and while I’m certainly no expert, I definitely know a little more than nothing! 😉 This journey has been about much more than just painting furniture; it’s about connecting, inspiring, and building a community around shared passions. It’s about demonstrating that with a little creativity and effort, anyone can transform their space and find joy in the process.

4. How Does My Writing and Creating Process Work?

My creative process is, to put it mildly, delightfully chaotic and constantly driving me. My mind is always refreshing with new ideas, new ways to transform a piece, or a novel approach to home decor. My biggest wish is that I could bring all these burgeoning ideas to fruition at once! In reality, my workflow often looks something like this: I might have four or five projects completely finished, meticulously painted, thoroughly dry, perfectly photographed, and then… I finally sit down to write about them. I often need a little time to “mull over the process,” to reflect on the challenges, the discoveries, and the story behind each piece before I can articulate it effectively for my readers. And then, there are those projects that momentarily slip my mind, only to be rediscovered during a scroll through my photo archives, sparking a fresh wave of inspiration and a new blog post idea.

Prior to the closing, I scoured the magazine stands and read all the Do-It-Yourself publications. I was a devoted watcher of Lynette Jennings and Christopher Lowell! The day we moved in, I started painting the kitchen cabinets white! I am such a perfectionist that it took a month! I even painted the interiors of the cabinets. I had to follow the magazine’s instructions to the step! No internet back then or Annie Sloan Chalk paint!” It’s truly fascinating to hear how Christy’s passion ignited.
