Step 2: Cutting Your Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV)

Place your HTV onto your cutting mat with the shiny, carrier sheet side down. Load the mat into your Cricut machine. Select “Heat Transfer Vinyl” or “Iron-On” as your material setting in Design Space. This setting ensures your machine uses the correct pressure for a clean cut. Perform a small test cut if you’re unsure of your settings, especially if using a new brand of vinyl.

Step 3: Weeding the Excess Vinyl

With your design perfectly positioned on the shirt (carrier sheet facing up), it’s time to apply heat. The method and duration will vary slightly depending on whether you’re using a heat press or a household iron.

Using a Heat Press: Preheat your heat press to approximately 300°F (149°C). Place your shirt with the design on the lower platen, ensuring the entire design is within the heat press area. Apply even, firm pressure for about 10-15 seconds. Different HTV brands may have slightly varied temperature and time recommendations, so always check your vinyl manufacturer’s instructions if available.
Using a Household Iron: Set your iron to the cotton setting with no steam. Ensure your ironing surface is firm and flat – an ironing board can work, but a wooden cutting board with a towel offers a more stable base. Place a thin piece of fabric (like a tea towel) over your design to protect the vinyl and shirt. Press down firmly with steady, even pressure for 20-25 seconds over each section of the design. You may need to move the iron, overlapping slightly, to cover the entire design. The key here is consistent heat and pressure across the whole graphic.

Step 6: The Big Reveal – Peeling the Carrier Sheet
