Simply center your printed graphic on the glass, secure it with tape, and place a light source (like a utility light) underneath. Then, carefully position your fabric on top of the graphic, ensuring it’s perfectly centered. Secure the fabric with tape to prevent any shifting during painting. This centering step is critical – nothing is more frustrating than finishing a project only to realize the design is crooked!

Assembling Your Masterpiece: Sewing Your Halloween Pillow

Begin by laying your front fabric piece (the painted design) on top of your back fabric piece, with the right sides of both fabrics facing each other. This ensures that the seams will be hidden once the pillow is turned right side out. Carefully align all edges. Next, you’ll need to leave an opening for turning and stuffing. On the bottom edge of your pillow, leave a generous 12-inch gap unstitched in the middle. This opening will allow you to easily insert your pillow form later. Pin the fabric pieces together around the remaining three sides and along the sides of the 12-inch gap, ensuring everything is smooth and secure.

Now, stitch (or hand sew, if you prefer) a 1/2-inch seam all the way around the pillow, carefully stopping and starting at the edges of your 12-inch gap. For enhanced durability, especially for a pillow that will see regular use or display, we recommend stitching over this seam a second time. After the main seam is complete, use a zigzag stitch around the outside edge of your seam allowance. This helps to prevent the fabric from raveling and fraying over time, giving your pillow a more professional and long-lasting finish.

Before turning your pillowcase right side out, clip the corners. Carefully cut diagonally across each corner, getting close to the stitch line but being extremely careful not to cut into your actual seam. This step is essential as it removes excess fabric bulk, allowing the corners to turn out sharply and cleanly, giving your finished pillow a crisp, tailored look.

Turn your pillowcase right side out through the 12-inch opening. To get perfectly sharp corners, use a chopstick, a turning tool, or another blunt, pointed object to gently push out each corner from the inside. Be gentle to avoid poking through the fabric. Once the corners are fully extended, your pillowcase will take its final shape.

Now, it’s time to stuff your pillow! Carefully insert your 18″ x 18″ pillow form into the case through the opening you left at the bottom. Adjust the insert to ensure it fills the pillowcase evenly, pushing it into the corners for a plump and uniform look. Once the insert is in place, pin the opening closed, aligning the raw edges of the fabric. For a truly seamless closure, gently push the pillow insert back about an inch from the pinned opening and pin again. This creates a smooth, flat area, making it much easier for your sewing machine’s presser foot to glide over and stitch the opening closed flawlessly. Stitch a 1/2-inch seam along this opening at the bottom. With that final stitch, your stunning hand-painted Halloween pillow is complete!
