DIY Chicken Coop Coffee Table: Supplies & Steps

Ready to create your own unique farmhouse coffee table? This project requires minimal supplies and straightforward steps. Here’s what you’ll need to gather:

Materials Required:

• Vintage Chicken Coop Crate: The star of our project! Look for one that is sturdy and has character.
• Two 2″ x 4″ Scrap Pieces of Lumber: Each piece should be approximately 19 inches long. These will serve as a foundational support and add height.
• Four Casters: Essential for mobility and adding a touch of industrial farmhouse style. You can often find a set of four for less than $12.
• Wood Screws: You’ll need about 20 screws in total – four for each caster and two for securing each 2″ x 4″ lumber piece to the coop.
• Paint (Optional): If you want to paint your 2x4s to match or contrast with the coop.
• Bleach Solution: For thorough cleaning.
• Pressure Washer (or stiff brush and hose): For deep cleaning the coop.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Thoroughly Clean the Chicken Coop: This is a crucial first step, especially when working with thrift store finds. Even if the coop doesn’t *appear* dirty, it’s vital to sanitize it. I recommend spraying it thoroughly with a bleach solution (e.g., 1 part bleach to 10 parts water) and then using a pressure washer to remove any hidden dirt, dust, or lingering odors. If you don’t have a pressure washer, a stiff brush and a garden hose will also work effectively. Allow it to dry completely in the sun.

3. Attach Lumber to the Base: Carefully position the painted (or unpainted) 2″ x 4″ lumber pieces to the bottom of the chicken coop/crate. Creative Tip: If casters aren’t your preference, or if you prefer a more stationary piece, you can easily skip them! Instead, consider attaching sturdy furniture legs or even decorative wooden blocks to the 2″ x 4″ pieces to achieve the desired height and style. Hairpin legs, for example, could offer a mid-century modern twist to this farmhouse piece.

Functional Design & Styling Options

One of the brilliant features of this particular chicken coop was its sliding top. This design element makes it incredibly practical, allowing you to easily access the spacious interior for storage. It’s the perfect spot to tuck away magazines, remote controls, extra throw blankets, or even a collection of books, keeping your living room tidy and stylish.

When it comes to the tabletop surface, you have options to customize it to your preference. While you could certainly add a piece of glass to the top for a smooth, easy-to-clean surface, I personally opted for a rustic wood tray. A wood tray also offers flexibility, allowing you to easily change out decor items or simply remove it for full access to the storage below.
