7. Drill: An electric drill is essential for drilling pilot holes and driving screws with ease and efficiency.
8. Sanding Tools: A sander (either an orbital or palm sander) equipped with various grits of sandpaper. You’ll want 80-grit for initial shaping and rough spot removal, 120-grit for smoothing, and 220-grit for achieving a beautifully fine, touchable finish.
9. Dowel: A simple wooden dowel will prove incredibly useful. Wrap sandpaper around it to easily access and smooth curved areas and the interior edges of the handle opening.
10. Paint: For that desirable distressed, matte, or vintage look, chalk-type paint is an excellent choice. I used Waverly Elephant, but any quality chalk-type paint will yield beautiful results.

If you’re repurposing scrap wood, make sure all your chosen pieces are uniform in length to maintain a cohesive aesthetic.

Step 2: Join the Boards with Pocket Holes

• To achieve the desired width for your decorative board, you will join two of your 24-inch wood pieces. Utilize your Kreg Jig to create four pocket holes along one long edge of each board. These pocket holes should be strategically spaced: two towards the center for core strength and one closer to each end for added stability.
• While optional, applying a thin, even bead of wood glue along the entire joining edge of the two boards before screwing them together will significantly enhance the strength and longevity of your finished piece.
• Carefully align the two board pieces, ensuring their faces are perfectly flush. Then, use 1 1/4″ Kreg screws to securely fasten them through the pre-drilled pocket holes. Repeat this entire process for the remaining two 24-inch boards, resulting in two wider board blanks, each ready for shaping.

Take your time to ensure controlled cuts for the best results.

• For the hanging hole in the handle, you can either freehand a circle or use a smaller circular template for a more uniform shape. Aim for a size that is practical for hanging.

• Using a large drill bit, create a pilot hole within the boundaries of your traced circle on the handle. This pilot hole is crucial as it allows you to safely insert your jigsaw or Bladerunner blade to begin your cut.
• If using the Bladerunner, lift its guard, carefully position the drilled hole over the blade, and slowly cut along your pencil line to complete the circular opening. For a handheld jigsaw, simply insert the blade into the pilot hole and meticulously cut around the marked circle.

Step 5: Sanding for a Flawless Finish

• Sanding is a vital step that transforms your raw wood into a smooth, splinter-free surface, perfectly preparing it for paint or stain. Begin with a coarser grit sandpaper (around 80-100 grit) to efficiently remove any rough edges, saw marks, or significant imperfections.
• Next, move to a medium grit (120-150 grit) to further refine the wood and eliminate any scratches left by the coarser paper. Finally, finish with a fine grit (200-220 grit) to achieve a buttery-smooth, touchable surface.
• Ingenious Tip: When tackling those challenging rounded areas and the inside edges of the handle’s hole, wrap a piece of sandpaper tightly around a wooden dowel. This clever improvisation acts as a mini sanding tool, allowing you to access and smooth all contours effectively, ensuring a truly professional finish.

Step 6: Personalize and Paint

• With your board sanded to perfection, it’s now a blank canvas awaiting its final decorative touches. Apply your chosen chalk-type paint (like Waverly Elephant or any other preferred brand) in thin, even coats. Chalk paint is renowned for its excellent adhesion and ability to create a beautiful, matte finish that is ideal for achieving a vintage or distressed look.
