The solution, as often happens, presented itself when I least expected it. While tidying up my craft room, I rediscovered an old lamp I had picked up at a local thrift store a few years prior. Its forgotten potential suddenly sparked a vibrant idea. The base of the lamp was the perfect color, a subtle hue that seamlessly blended with the serene blue and grey palette I had envisioned for Ryder’s nursery. This was it – the lamp would be transformed!
Our nursery design was heavily inspired by an adorable whale-themed fabric, which served as both my inspiration board and color guide. I decided to use a piece of this charming fabric to give the lamp shade a complete makeover. To further personalize the lamp and tie it into the aquatic theme, I applied a simple yet elegant vinyl wave design to its base. In less than an hour, and for an astonishingly low cost of under $10, I had created a truly unique and heartwarming whale lamp for Ryder’s nursery. This project not only fulfilled the upcycling challenge but also added a deeply personal touch to his space. Essential Supplies for Your Whale Lamp Transformation
Embarking on any DIY project begins with gathering the right tools and materials. For this nursery whale lamp, the beauty lies in its simplicity and affordability. Most items can be found around your home, at craft stores, or even at your local thrift shop, perfectly aligning with the upcycling ethos. Here’s a detailed list of what you’ll need to bring this charming project to life:
- Thrifted Lamp: The star of our project! Look for a lamp with a sturdy base and a basic lampshade. Don’t worry about the color or current shade design; we’re going to transform it! This is where you can find incredible value and unique shapes.
- Whale-Themed Fabric (or any fabric of your choice): Choose a fabric that complements your nursery’s theme and color scheme. For Ryder’s room, the whale pattern was perfect. Make sure to get enough to wrap around your lampshade with a little extra for seam allowance.
- Basic Crafting Tools:
- Scissors: Sharp scissors are essential for clean fabric cuts.
- Ruler: For accurate measurements of your fabric.
- Pen or Fabric Marker: To mark your cutting lines on the fabric.
- Hot Glue Gun & Hot Glue Sticks: This is our primary adhesive for securing the fabric to the lampshade. A hot glue gun provides a strong, quick bond, which is ideal for this project.
- Hot Glue Gun Helpers (Optional but Recommended): These silicone finger protectors can save your fingertips from hot glue burns and make it easier to press fabric into tight spaces.
- Binder Clips (or fabric clips): Useful for holding the fabric in place while the glue sets, ensuring a smooth, taut finish.
- Vinyl: We used white vinyl for the wave design, but feel free to experiment with colors that match your nursery. Vinyl is incredibly versatile for adding custom details.
- Cricut Explore (or other cutting machine): This machine is fantastic for precision cutting vinyl designs. It makes creating intricate patterns like our waves incredibly easy and professional-looking.
- Cricut Design Space Software: The companion software for your Cricut machine, where you’ll design or select your vinyl cut files.
- Vinyl Applicator Tool (or credit card): This tool helps smooth out the vinyl and remove any air bubbles during application, ensuring a flawless finish.
Having these supplies ready before you begin will ensure a smooth and enjoyable crafting experience, leading to a beautiful and personalized nursery lamp.
Step-by-Step Guide: Transforming Your Lamp into a Nursery Masterpiece
This project is divided into two main parts: revamping the lampshade with fabric and adding a custom vinyl design to the lamp base. Each step is designed to be straightforward, even for beginner crafters, ensuring a satisfying result.
Part 1: The Lampshade Transformation
The lampshade is often the focal point of a lamp, and giving it a fresh fabric cover can completely change its character. For Ryder’s nursery, I wanted a soft, integrated look with our whale theme.
- Measure and Cut Your Fabric: First, unroll your chosen fabric and lay it flat. Carefully wrap your lampshade around the fabric, making sure to leave at least 1-2 inches of overlap on each side and 1-2 inches extra at the top and bottom edges. Use your pen to mark the dimensions directly onto the fabric, then cut it out with sharp scissors. Precision here ensures a neat finish. If your lampshade has a slight taper, you may need to cut your fabric at a slight angle to match, allowing for a smooth wrap without wrinkles.
- Secure the Fabric to the Shade: Begin by applying a thin line of hot glue along one vertical edge of the lampshade’s frame. Carefully press one edge of your fabric onto this glue line, ensuring it’s straight. Work in small sections, applying glue and pressing the fabric firmly into place.
- Wrap and Secure: Continue wrapping the fabric tightly around the lampshade, maintaining tension to prevent wrinkles. As you wrap, apply hot glue along the top and bottom inner edges of the lampshade frame, folding the excess fabric over and pressing it into the glue. This creates a clean, finished edge. This is where those Hot Glue Gun Helpers come in handy, allowing you to push the fabric into the sides without burning your fingers. For added security and to ensure the fabric stays taut while the glue dries, use binder clips around the top and bottom edges.
- Finishing the Seam: Once you’ve wrapped the fabric all the way around, you’ll have an overlap. If your fabric doesn’t have a finished seam, fold over one of the raw edges by about half an inch and press it flat. Apply a final line of hot glue along the exposed edge of the lampshade and carefully press the folded fabric seam over it, creating a clean, professional finish. Hold firmly until the glue sets.
I found the perfect whale fabric at Hawthorne Threads. Although it was on back order when I first decided to purchase, I managed to find a few yards from an alternative seller, proving that persistence pays off when searching for that perfect material!
Part 2: Embellishing the Lamp Base with Vinyl Waves
Adding a vinyl design to the lamp base is where the Cricut machine truly shines, allowing for intricate and consistent designs that would be difficult to achieve by hand.
- Design Your Waves in Cricut Design Space: Open Cricut Design Space. You can either choose a pre-designed wave pattern from their extensive library or create your own simple wave shape. Measure the circumference and height of your lamp base to determine the appropriate size for your vinyl design. The goal is a subtle yet thematic accent.
- Cut the Vinyl with Your Cricut Explore: Load your chosen vinyl onto a cutting mat and insert it into your Cricut Explore machine. Select the “Vinyl” setting on your machine for a precise cut. The Cricut machine will effortlessly cut out your wave designs, ready for application. This step showcases the power of the Cricut for customized home decor.
- Weed the Vinyl: Once cut, carefully “weed” the vinyl, which means removing any excess vinyl that is not part of your wave design. This leaves only your desired pattern on the backing paper.
- Apply Transfer Tape: Cut a piece of transfer tape slightly larger than your vinyl design. Place the transfer tape over your weeded vinyl, pressing it down firmly with your vinyl applicator tool (or a credit card) to ensure the vinyl adheres well to the tape. This will allow you to lift the entire design from its backing.
- Apply Vinyl to the Lamp Base: Carefully peel the transfer tape, with the vinyl design attached, off the backing paper. Position your wave design onto the lamp base exactly where you want it. Press down firmly, working from the center outwards, using your vinyl applicator tool to smooth out any air bubbles. Slowly peel off the transfer tape, leaving your perfectly applied vinyl wave design on the lamp base.
The Beautiful Result: A Transformed Nursery Lamp
And just like that, with a little creativity and a few simple steps, a forgotten thrift store misfit lamp is now revamped into a beautiful, thematic DIY Nursery Whale Lamp! It’s incredible to see how a piece that once sat unnoticed can become a cherished item with just a bit of imagination and effort. This project truly embodies the spirit of upcycling – giving new life to old treasures.
Here I am, in all my 9 months of belly glory, proudly showcasing the finished lamp. I believe I was around 37 or 38 weeks pregnant in this photo! Creating something so special for Ryder’s nursery during this precious nesting phase was incredibly fulfilling. It added to the excitement of his impending arrival, knowing that a piece of my love and effort would illuminate his new world.

I honestly never thought I would need more than the overhead light from the ceiling fan in the nursery, but boy, was I wrong! This lamp has become an indispensable part of our daily routine. Its soft, ambient glow creates a soothing atmosphere for late-night feedings, diaper changes, and quiet story times. It provides just the right amount of light without being too harsh, making it perfect for those precious moments with Ryder. It’s more than just a light source; it’s a piece of art, a memory, and a functional addition that ties the entire nursery together.

Since sharing our nursery, I’ve had quite a few inquiries about the adorable turtle pictured in some of Ryder’s nursery photos. It’s called the “Tranquil Turtle,” and it’s truly a magical addition to any baby’s room. This ingenious little device plays a selection of soothing spa-like music and gentle ocean waves, creating a calm auditory environment perfect for sleep. But what makes it truly captivating is its projection feature: it lights up, projecting calming ocean waves onto the walls and ceiling, transforming the room into an underwater oasis. It’s an excellent tool for comforting babies and helping them drift off to sleep. You can typically find the Tranquil Turtle at most baby specialty stores, and I believe Target often carries it as well, though it might sometimes be available online only.
