My family’s property boasts two magnificent magnolia trees, which had recently undergone a necessary trimming by the electric company to clear limbs away from the power pole. As I drove up, I spotted several beautiful magnolia logs lying on the ground, and a little spark of excitement ignited within me.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about finding discarded natural materials and envisioning their potential. You never quite know what unique creation will emerge from a downed limb or a fallen branch, but having such treasures on hand always feels like a secret stash of creative possibilities. These magnolia logs, with their sturdy structure and unique bark patterns, were just begging to be transformed into something special. This moment perfectly illustrates the core philosophy of DIY: seeing value and beauty where others might see only waste, and transforming it into something functional and delightful.

Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks: Your trusty hot glue gun will be essential for securely attaching the glass to the wood. Make sure you have plenty of glue sticks on hand for a strong bond.
Cut Log Pieces: This is where the “nature-inspired” element truly comes in. Seek out fallen branches or small logs from your yard, local park (with permission!), or even craft stores if you can’t find natural ones. Magnolia, cedar, birch, or oak all work wonderfully. The key is to find pieces that are sturdy and have an interesting bark texture.
Faux Snow (or Alternatives): To create a charming, frosty, or snowy effect, you can use faux snow from craft stores. However, for an even more budget-friendly and natural look, common household items like rock salt, Epsom salts, or even sugar can achieve a similar sparkling, icy appearance.

Step 1: Prepare Your Wood Bases

If you’re using logs you’ve gathered, the first step is to prepare them. Using a miter saw, carefully cut your logs into sturdy, flat pieces. I recommend cutting them into varying heights to create a dynamic and visually appealing display. For instance, I chose three different sizes, avoiding the uniformity that can sometimes make arrangements feel stiff. However, this project is wonderfully versatile, so if you prefer a consistent height, feel free to cut all your pieces identically. Ensure the top and bottom surfaces of each log piece are flat and stable so your glass vases sit securely and your candle holder doesn’t wobble.

Step 2: Secure the Glass Vases to the Wood

Now for the main assembly! Take one of your cut log pieces and a Dollar Tree glass vase. Apply a generous amount of hot glue to the bottom rim of the glass vase. Carefully center the glued vase onto the top, flat surface of your wood log. Press down firmly for several seconds to ensure a strong bond. Allow the glue to cool and set completely before moving or handling the candle holder, usually just a minute or two.

Repeat this process for all your desired candle holders. Remember, odd numbers often create the most aesthetically pleasing decorative arrangements, so consider making a set of three or five to start.

Step 3: Add Your “Snow” and Candles

Once your glue has fully cured and your glass and wood are securely joined, it’s time to add the magical touch! Carefully fill each glass vase with your chosen “faux snow” – whether it’s craft store faux snow, rock salt, Epsom salts, or sugar. I personally love the look of rock salt; it mimics ice so perfectly! I was lucky to have some in my pantry from a summer ice cream making attempt (or lack thereof!).

After adding your filler, nestle a tea light or votive candle into the center of the “snow.” For an extra touch of natural charm, you can also add a small cedar clipping, a tiny pinecone, or a sprig of evergreen alongside the candle. This enhances the nature-inspired theme and adds a beautiful aromatic element if you use real evergreens.
