Yet, Haven Conference 2013 didn’t just meet those expectations—it soared past them, delivering an experience that was even more enriching, inspiring, and thoroughly enjoyable. This year’s event in Atlanta truly cemented its place as an essential gathering for anyone passionate about DIY, home decor, and the vibrant world of blogging. My heart is already set: I will absolutely be back!

Stepping into Haven Conference 2013 felt like a joyous homecoming, a reunion with my creative tribe. Here, I found myself enveloped by an incredible community of talented and inspiring individuals, a true gathering of awesomeness. It was a privilege to spend time with some of the industry’s most respected voices, including Thrifty Decor Chic, Beneath My Heart, Just A Girl, and Home Stories A to Z. These are the pioneers who have shaped the DIY and home decor blogging landscape, and being in their presence, sharing ideas, and simply connecting on a personal level was genuinely exhilarating. The energy in the room, surrounded by such passion and creativity, was palpable and truly infectious.

Peering out over the horizon, I couldn’t help but wonder if I spotted the iconic blue and yellow sign of Ikea in the distance—a tantalizing thought for any DIY enthusiast! The city offered a vibrant urban energy that perfectly complemented the creative buzz of the conference. It was a constant reminder of the possibilities that lie beyond our individual creative spaces, the wider world waiting to be explored and inspired.

My wonderful travel companion, Jamie from Southern Revivals, and I were absolutely beaming, radiating pure joy and excitement to be at Haven. One of the absolute highlights of Haven 2013 was the opportunity to hear from the phenomenal Ana White. Ana is not only brilliant and articulate but also possesses a graceful charm that captivated the entire audience. Her dedication to making woodworking accessible to everyone through her free furniture plans is truly commendable. In fact, it was Ana White’s incredible resources that inspired my very first build project, empowering me to pick up tools I never thought I’d use. She is also the sole reason I proudly own a Kreg jig today—a tool that has revolutionized my approach to woodworking and opened up a world of possibilities. Her session was a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have on a community, fostering confidence and encouraging countless individuals to embrace their inner builder.

Connecting with Creative Stars: More Inspiring Bloggers

The conference floor was a constant hub of activity, offering countless opportunities to meet and chat with some of the biggest names in the DIY and home decor space. It’s incredibly easy to get a little star-struck when you’re meeting so many of these amazing ladies whose work you’ve admired online for so long. I had the pleasure of connecting with Rebecca from You Are Talking Too Much, Gina from The Shabby Creek Cottage, Jader Bomb from JADER BOMB, Marian, famously known as Miss Mustard Seed, and Mandi from Vintage Revivals. Each conversation, no matter how brief, was a source of inspiration and genuine connection. Next year, I’m definitely going to create a meticulous list of all the friends I want to catch up with and new connections I hope to make, because I know I missed some familiar faces in the whirlwind of excitement!

Hands-On with Ryobi: Power Tools and Practical Tips

One of the greatest joys of Haven is the opportunity for hands-on learning, and this year was no exception. I had an absolute blast getting to play with new power tools, thanks to the generous folks at Ryobi! Their interactive station allowed us to try out various tools in a safe and supportive environment. It was an excellent chance to enhance my woodworking skills, as I picked up several valuable tricks and tips that I’m eager to incorporate into my future DIY projects. The experience was both educational and incredibly empowering, proving that with the right guidance, anyone can master these tools and bring their creative visions to life.

Shanty2Chic: Learning from Real-World DIY

The workshop led by the dynamic duo from Shanty2Chic was another standout session. They expertly guided us through the construction of a beautiful spice rack, breaking down the process into manageable steps. What made this class truly exceptional, however, wasn’t just the instruction, but a delightful little “blooper” moment. When it came time to assemble, the dowels weren’t lining up perfectly because one of the sides hadn’t been put together correctly. In that moment, an audible gasp went through the room, quickly followed by laughter. The Shanty2Chic girls handled it with such grace and humor, quickly disassembling and correcting the problem. I’m convinced they totally planned it, just to make us all feel better about our own occasional DIY mishaps! It was a brilliant, real-world lesson that underscored a vital principle: don’t be afraid to try new things out of fear of failure. Mistakes happen, and they’re often the best teachers. This moment reinforced the idea that DIY is a journey of learning, adapting, and finding joy in the process, imperfections and all.

The DIY workshops at Haven were incredibly diverse and certainly not limited to woodworking alone! Traci from Beneath My Heart organized an ingenious and highly engaging event called the DIY Shuffle. This innovative concept brought together various DIY techniques and challenges in a fast-paced, collaborative setting. It was a whirlwind of creativity, problem-solving, and pure fun. I sincerely hope I can find a video of the DIY Shuffle to share with you all because it was truly out of this world! These diverse workshops ensured that every attendee, regardless of their preferred craft, found something new and exciting to learn, pushing the boundaries of their creative comfort zones.

As I mentioned, traveling with Jamie from Southern Revivals was an absolute delight. Our journey to Atlanta was filled with laughter, conversation, and, of course, a little bit of opportunistic shopping! Once we had established our bearings and were confident about the hotel’s location, we embarked on a quick but incredibly rewarding excursion to the Pottery Barn Outlet and the Restoration Hardware Outlet. These visits are always a treasure hunt, and this time was no exception. We unearthed some truly awesome deals on home decor and furnishings that I simply cannot wait to share with you all in upcoming posts.
