Trust me, you can do this!

Furniture Paint: I used Maison Blanche Vintage Furniture Paint in the color “Cobblestone.” Chalk-based paints are excellent for furniture due to their adhesion and matte finish. Other options include latex or enamel paints designed for furniture.
Finishing Wax or Top Coat: To protect your painted chairs and enhance their durability. I used Maison Blanche Lime Wax. Alternatives include polycrylic (water-based for a clear finish) or polyurethane (oil-based for more durability, but can yellow light colors).
Wet Sanding Supplies (Optional): Fine-grit wet/dry sandpaper (e.g., 400-600 grit) and a bowl of water, if you plan to achieve a super smooth or distressed finish.

Detailed Preparation: The Foundation for Flawless Chairs

Preparation is arguably the most critical step in any painting project. Skimping on prep will lead to a subpar finish that won’t last. Dedicate ample time to this stage.

1. Disassemble and Inspect

Begin by carefully removing any chair cushions, hardware, or detachable parts. This ensures full coverage and prevents accidental paint on areas that shouldn’t be painted. Take this opportunity to inspect the chairs for any loose joints, cracks, or damage. Tighten screws and make any necessary repairs before proceeding.

2. Thorough Cleaning

Years of use can leave dining chairs covered in grease, grime, and food residue. A clean surface is paramount for paint adhesion. Mix a degreaser solution or a 50/50 blend of white vinegar and water. Use a clean rag to meticulously wipe down every surface of each chair. Pay special attention to areas where hands frequently touch. Allow the chairs to dry completely before moving on.

3. Light Sanding for Adhesion

Even if your paint is advertised as “no-prep,” a light scuff sand is always recommended to provide the paint with a surface to grip. Using 120-220 grit sandpaper or a sanding sponge, lightly scuff the entire surface of each chair. The goal isn’t to remove the old finish, but to create a dull, slightly textured surface. After sanding, wipe the chairs down again with a damp cloth to remove all dust, then let them dry completely.

Follow the manufacturer’s directions to assemble your sprayer. The HomeRight sprayer is known for being easy to put together with very few parts. For paint, I typically put 1/4 cup of clean water into the paint cup, then fill it with paint up to the 800 ml line, stirring very well. If you’re using a pre-opened can of paint, it’s a good practice to strain the paint through a fine mesh paint strainer to catch any clumps or debris that could clog your sprayer. I mixed the maximum amount since I was painting six chairs. For smaller amounts, refer to the thinning directions included with your sprayer, or do a small test. The consistency should be like thin cream.

2. Safety First: Gear Up!

Before you begin spraying, always put on your gloves, mask, and eye protection. Proper safety measures are non-negotiable when working with paints and aerosols.

3. Master Your Spray Technique

Start with the Undersides: Begin by painting the bottoms of your chairs first. This allows you to get comfortable with the sprayer’s feel and technique in less visible areas. Once the undersides are done (and slightly dry if using quick-drying paint), flip the chairs over to paint the rest. This strategy ensures you achieve comprehensive coverage without having to awkwardly maneuver around already painted surfaces.

Consistent Strokes: Hold the sprayer about 6-10 inches away from the surface. Use smooth, even, overlapping strokes, moving your arm, not just your wrist. Start spraying off the piece and end spraying off the piece to avoid paint build-up at the edges. Apply several light coats rather than one thick coat to prevent drips and achieve a smoother finish.

Quick-Drying Paint Advantage: With chalk-based paints, which dry quickly, I found that by the time I finished the sixth chair, the first one was dry enough to start the next coat. This significantly speeds up the process.

4. Inspect and Touch Up

After your first few coats, carefully inspect each chair to ensure you haven’t missed any spots. If you find any bare areas, apply another light coat with the sprayer. If, like me, you discover a few missed spots after you’ve cleaned up your sprayer, a small paint brush can be used for precise touch-ups.

5. Wet Sanding for an Ultra-Smooth Finish (Optional)

If you desire an incredibly smooth, buttery finish or want to gently distress your chairs, wet sanding is an excellent technique. After your final paint coat has dried completely (usually 24 hours), dip fine-grit wet/dry sandpaper (e.g., 400 or 600 grit) into a bowl of water. Gently sand the painted surface in circular motions, rinsing the sandpaper frequently. This process smooths out any minor imperfections and creates a beautifully soft feel. Wipe away any sanding residue with a damp cloth and let the chairs dry completely.

6. Apply Your Protective Top Coat

Once the chairs are fully dry and any wet sanding is complete, it’s time to apply your chosen protective finish. For Maison Blanche paint, I used their Lime Wax. Apply wax with a lint-free cloth, buffing it into the surface. If you opt for polycrylic or polyurethane, apply thin coats with a brush or a compatible sprayer, following the product’s specific instructions for drying times between coats and total cure time. This top coat will seal the paint, protect against daily wear and tear, and make your chairs easier to clean.

Expert Tips for Success

Work Quickly with Fast-Drying Paints: Because chalk-based paints dry so fast, I was able to finish all six chairs in the same afternoon.
Sprayer Maintenance is Key: If you plan to stop painting for 30 minutes or more, it’s best to completely wash your sprayer to prevent paint from drying and clogging the nozzle.
Clear Nozzle Buildup: Occasionally, the tip of the sprayer might accumulate a bit of dried paint. Simply scrape it off with your fingernail or a small tool to maintain a consistent spray pattern. This sprayer is genuinely easy to use and even easier to clean!
