You’ll need four 1″ screws for attaching the L-brackets to the window frame and four 1/2″ screws for securing the shelf board to the L-brackets. Measure and Cut Your Shelf Board: Begin by precisely measuring the overall width of your old window frame. This measurement will dictate the exact length of your shelf board, ensuring it fits perfectly across the window. Using a circular saw, miter saw, or even a hand saw, carefully cut your 1″ x 8″ lumber to this exact length. For instance, if your window is 32″ wide, your shelf board should also be cut to 32″. After cutting, lightly sand any rough edges or splinters for a smooth, finished look, which is especially important if you plan to paint or stain the board later.
Mark L-Bracket Placement on the Window: Lay your window flat on a stable, level work surface. Determine the desired height for your shelf along the window frame. Using a pencil, mark the precise spots on the vertical sides of the window frame where the L-brackets will be attached. It’s crucial that these marks are level with each other and equidistant from the outer edges of the window to ensure the shelf is balanced and visually appealing. Use a level or a ruler for accuracy.
Pre-Drill Pilot Holes on the Window Frame: Select a drill bit that is slightly smaller in diameter than the 1″ screws you intend to use for attaching the L-brackets. Carefully drill pilot holes at each of your marked spots on the window frame. Pre-drilling is a vital step as it prevents the wood from splitting when you drive in the screws, a common issue, especially with older, drier wood frames.
Attach L-Brackets to the Window: Switch your drill bit to a suitable screwdriver bit that matches your 1″ screws. Align the L-brackets with the pre-drilled holes on the window frame. Using four 1″ screws (two screws per bracket), firmly attach the L-brackets to the window frame. Ensure they are secured tightly and sit flush against the window surface to provide maximum support.
Position and Mark Shelf Board: Carefully place your cut shelf board onto the attached L-brackets. Hold the board firmly in its desired position. Using your pencil, mark through the screw holes on the horizontal part of the L-brackets onto the underside of the shelf board. These marks will indicate precisely where you’ll attach the shelf to the brackets. Double-check that the board is centered and perfectly level before making your marks.
Pre-Drill Shelf Board Pilot Holes: Remove the shelf board from the L-brackets. Using a drill bit slightly smaller than your 1/2″ screws, pre-drill pilot holes at the marks you just made on the underside of the shelf board. This step, once again, is critical for preventing the wood from splitting and significantly eases the insertion of the screws.
Attach the Shelf to the L-Brackets: Reposition the shelf board onto the L-brackets, carefully aligning the pre-drilled holes on the shelf with the holes on the brackets. Using four 1/2″ screws (two screws per bracket), securely attach the shelf board to the L-brackets. Ensure all connections are tight and that the shelf is stable and firmly integrated with the window frame.
Attach D-Rings for Hanging: Flip the entire assembled unit over so the back of the window frame is facing up. Measure and mark two equidistant spots near the top of the window frame for your heavy-duty D-rings. These should be spaced appropriately to balance the shelf’s weight. Pre-drill small pilot holes for the D-ring screws. Attach the D-rings firmly, ensuring they are level and capable of safely supporting the combined weight of the window shelf and any items you plan to display on it.
Add Decorative Garden Tools (Optional): If you’ve chosen to include the charming hand rake and shovel, decide on their desired placement on the window frame – perhaps along the sides or top. Pre-drill small pilot holes through the handles of the tools and into the window frame to prevent splitting. Using 3/4″ screws, attach the tools securely.
