There’s a special kind of magic that happens when you’re preparing for a new arrival, and for us, that magic manifested as a deep desire to infuse Ryder’s nursery with a calming, aquatic theme. From the very beginning of brainstorming ideas for his room, fish became the central motif. I envisioned a lively school of fish gracefully swimming from one end of his wall to the next, creating a sense of movement and tranquility. To add another layer of personalization and depth, we incorporated hand-cut letters spelling out his name, strategically placed so the paper fish appeared to be emerging directly from it. The result was pure joy – a bespoke, heartwarming space that felt truly unique.

What makes this DIY paper fish nursery decor project even more appealing is its incredible affordability. While it certainly falls into the “time is money” category, requiring patience and dedication to cut over 90 individual fish and meticulously adhere them to the wall, the material cost is minimal. Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful I tackled this project before Ryder made his grand entrance. Juggling the demands of a newborn while trying to meticulously place each fish would have been an entirely different challenge!

Start by cutting a few batches of smaller fish, then gradually increase the size for subsequent batches. This variation in size is what will give your wall display incredible depth and a natural, flowing feel.

If you’re new to Cricut, a quick tutorial on how to upload an image in Cricut Design Space can be incredibly helpful. For cutting, the “card stock” setting on your Cricut Explore typically works perfectly for standard card stock, ensuring clean and precise cuts every time. Experiment with test cuts on scrap paper to confirm your settings before diving into your chosen card stock.

2. The Cutting Marathon: Producing Over 90 Fish

This is where patience truly becomes a virtue! With over 90 fish to cut, you’ll spend some quality time with your Cricut machine. Load your chosen shades of blue card stock one by one, alternating colors and sizes to create a dynamic assortment. It’s a rhythmic process: load mat, cut, unload mat, repeat. This repetitive action allows you to mentally prepare for the next step – arranging them.

Once all your fish are cut, the next logical step is to organize them. Stacking them by size, or perhaps by color and then size, will make the adhesion process much smoother. The 3-dimensional foam adhesive dots are your secret weapon for adding dynamic depth. For smaller fish, a single large adhesive dot strategically placed on the back is sufficient.

For larger fish, using two 3-dimensional foam adhesive dots provides extra stability and ensures they stand out from the wall beautifully. This slight elevation creates wonderful shadows and enhances the illusion of movement.

Don’t let corners intimidate you! For fish that fall exactly on a wall corner, a simple trick works wonders. Gently bend the fish by hand, pressing it softly along the crease of the wall. This allows it to wrap seamlessly around the corner, maintaining the continuous flow of your school of fish without interruption. This small detail significantly contributes to the overall immersive effect.

And there it was, in all its glory! The finished paper fish wall decor truly brought Ryder’s nursery to life. The subtle gradient of blue hues I selected, although in hindsight I might have preferred the lightest blue to be a touch darker, still works beautifully to create that sense of oceanic depth. As for future plans, if I ever stumble upon 24 x 24-inch paper, I’m dreaming of adding one GIANT fish to lead the entire pack. But for now, this vibrant, intricate display perfectly fulfills its purpose, bringing character and charm to Ryder’s room.
