Back in July, I couldn’t help but gush about my profound admiration for Sarah Richardson. A serendipitous discovery: two magnificent wingback chairs, found for under $40 each. The thrill of finding such treasures at an unbelievable price is a feeling every decor enthusiast cherishes. These weren’t just any chairs; they held the promise of transforming a corner of my home, a direct nod to the classic comfort and style I so admire in Sarah Richardson’s work. The challenge, of course, was getting them home. Luckily, a kind Marine and his wife generously lent their muscles, helping me load the bulky beauties onto my truck and bring them back to their new, temporary hiding spot – far from the watchful eye of Mr. reFresh. You see, while he appreciates a beautiful home, he often needs a little convincing when “junk” (as he affectionately calls my finds) makes its way through the door. For a couple of months, these chairs remained tucked away, a secret waiting for its grand reveal.
The initial plan was a classic DIY triumph: I would reupholster them myself. I pictured myself meticulously cutting fabric, wielding a staple gun, and achieving a professional finish. But as the months passed and I truly assessed the intricate curves and substantial size of these wingback beauties, a wave of realism washed over me. Reupholstering a simple dining chair is one thing; tackling two full-sized wingbacks with their complex shapes and deep tufting is an entirely different beast. Knowing my limits, or perhaps acknowledging a healthy dose of self-preservation, I decided to entrust them to the experts. I packed them off to a local professional upholsterer, a decision I’ve since celebrated wholeheartedly. And this week, they finally came home. The moment I saw them, meticulously transformed and gleaming, I almost drooled. The sheer joy and satisfaction of seeing a vision come to life, especially one that began with a bargain find, is indescribable. They are, simply put, everything I had hoped for and more.
The fabric choice was paramount to achieving the desired aesthetic. I wanted something timeless, textured, and incredibly durable, yet also soft to the touch. The fabric I selected is absolutely perfect. It boasts the visual appeal of classic burlap – a rustic, organic texture that adds depth and character – but none of its downsides. It doesn’t have that distinct burlap smell, nor does it possess the rough, scratchy feel that often comes with natural jute. In fact, it’s wonderfully soft. My grandsons, who are notorious for their aversion to “scratchy fabric,” have already given their seal of approval, a true testament to its comfort. This incredible fabric, a fantastic find, cost me only $3.50 per yard! I sourced it from Sir’s Fabric in Fayetteville, TN, a place I’ve raved about before, and for good reason. In my humble opinion, it’s truly the best fabric store in the world. They offer an unparalleled selection, fantastic prices, and a treasure trove of unique finds that you simply won’t encounter in larger chain stores. It’s a true hidden gem for anyone passionate about upholstery, sewing, or any textile-based craft, even if they don’t know I exist!
Interestingly, the two chairs are slightly different sizes, a happy accident that actually adds to their charm and functionality. One feels perfectly proportioned for me, a cozy nook for reading or simply relaxing. The other, slightly larger, is clearly destined for Mr. reFresh, providing him with ample space to unwind. This subtle distinction allows for personalized comfort within a cohesive design scheme, making them truly “his and hers” pieces that complement each other beautifully without being perfectly identical. It’s these small details that contribute to a home feeling truly lived-in and thoughtfully designed.
This particular furniture transformation is one project where I am exceptionally glad I didn’t attempt the DIY route. While I often embrace the challenge of a do-it-yourself endeavor, and generally believe in pushing creative boundaries (perhaps I don’t *really* know my limits all the time!), there are instances when professional expertise is undeniably the smarter choice. The complex curves, piping, and overall construction of these wingback chairs demanded a level of skill and specialized equipment that I simply don’t possess. Investing in a professional upholsterer ensured a flawless finish, perfectly taut fabric, and durable construction that will stand the test of time. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the best DIY project is knowing when to call in the pros, especially when aiming for a high-quality, long-lasting result that truly elevates your home decor.
Unfortunately, I only managed to capture one “before” picture on my old phone before it gave up the ghost. Both chairs were a vibrant kaleidoscope of plaid, in shades that can only be described as pinky, peachy, and perhaps a little too reminiscent of the 80s for modern sensibilities. I actually took more detailed photos at the upholstery shop, intending to email them to myself, but in the excitement of getting a new phone, I completely forgot. While I can’t offer a full visual comparison, I hope you can get the general idea from what I do have. Imagine those dated, busy patterns completely replaced by the serene, textured beauty of the new fabric. The transformation from a potentially jarring, outdated aesthetic to one of sophisticated, timeless elegance is truly remarkable. It highlights the incredible power of upholstery to completely redefine a piece of furniture and, by extension, the entire ambiance of a room, taking it from an eyesore to a stunning focal point.
With my beautiful new wingbacks now gracing my home, my design vision continues to evolve. I already have a charming bench, and now these two elegant wingback chairs, each piece meticulously chosen or transformed to contribute to a cohesive and inviting space.
