    FAQs

How can I decorate my outside for Halloween on a budget?

I feel that the best and cheapest way to decorate your outside for Halloween is to make your decorations yourself! DIY decor is fun, cost-effective, and customizable for whatever you are looking to decorate. You can often find cheap materials for projects at the Dollar Store and other cheap retailers. However, if you do prefer store-bought decorations, I recommend purchasing decorations for the next season after the last one has passed, when the sales and clearance prices are marked!

When should you decorate for Halloween outside?

Either at the end of September or beginning of October I’ll start prepping for Halloween and putting decorations in the front yard and around the house. Whatever you prefer!

Should I decorate for fall or Halloween first?

I usually start decorating for fall time end of August or early September, then at the end of September or first week of October I start decorating for Halloween.

    Tips and Tricks

Here are a few of my favorite tips and tricks when making my own Halloween decorations.

    • Repurpose Everyday Items – Use items you already have around the house, such as jars, cardboard boxes, trash bags, and old clothes. These can be transformed into spooky props like lanterns, tombstones, spider webs, or scarecrows.
    • Add a Distressed or Aged Look – Make decorations appear more authentic by using techniques like sanding the edges of cardboard tombstones, staining fabric with tea, or adding black paint to objects to create a worn, aged effect.
    • Use Low-Cost Materials – Dollar stores and thrift shops are great places to find affordable supplies like plastic skeletons, faux spiders, fabric, or LED candles. Look for items that can be easily customized or repurposed.
    • Incorporate Lighting for a Spooky Atmosphere – Use string lights, LED candles, or glow sticks to add an eerie glow to your decorations. Place lights inside jack-o’-lanterns, behind paper silhouettes, or under sheer fabric to create a ghostly effect.
    • Use Natural Elements – Incorporate real branches, leaves, pinecones, and other natural materials for a creepy, organic look. You can also spray-paint these items black for a more dramatic effect.
    • Make It Weatherproof for Outdoor Use – I feel like this is a given being that we are talking about decorating for outside; however; seal them with a weatherproof spray or use materials like plastic, vinyl, or foam that can withstand the elements. Hot glue is often more durable for outdoor items than regular craft glue.
    • Get Creative with Paint – Paint is your best friend! Use spray paint or acrylics to give objects a Halloween-themed makeover. Black, orange, white, purple, and metallic colors like silver or gold can transform everyday items into festive décor. I once spray painted artificial ivy black so I could make it look dead!
    • Make Decorations Reusable – Consider durability when crafting your decorations, so you can reuse them in future years. Store items carefully after Halloween to preserve them for the next season. Most of my decor I’ve been using for over a decade because they get stored well throughout the year.
    • Don’t Overlook the Small Details – Adding small accents like plastic insects, fake blood, or skeleton hands can bring your decoration to life. The little details often make the biggest difference. I always use real moss from trees when decorating because it’s free and gives a great spooky effect!
