Nail Gun & Air Compressor: These tools make attaching the frame molding quick and secure, providing discrete fastening without visible nail heads.
Clamps: Crucial for holding glued pieces together firmly while the adhesive cures, preventing shifting and ensuring tight seams.
Orbital Sander & Shop Vac: Sanding is vital for achieving a smooth, paintable surface on both the plywood and the frame. The orbital sander makes this task efficient, and a shop vac helps keep your workspace clean of sawdust.

Designing Your Vinyl Masterpiece with Cricut

The initial phase of any custom vinyl decal project is the design, and for this, Cricut Craft Room became my digital canvas. I spent considerable time playing around with the phrase “Love Is Our Religion,” experimenting with different fonts, sizes, and layouts until I achieved the perfect aesthetic. Consistency was key, so I decided to set all my words to exactly 12 inches wide, ensuring a harmonious balance across the entire design.

A crucial step I always recommend before committing to vinyl is to cut out a paper template. This simple practice is a fantastic way to visualize your design on the actual surface, allowing you to make any necessary adjustments to spacing, alignment, and overall impact without wasting expensive vinyl. It acts as a trial run, helping you refine your vision. Once I was completely satisfied with the paper cutout, I knew I was ready to proceed with the vinyl cuts.

Crafting the Perfect Wooden Base & Frame

With my design finalized, it was time to prepare the physical canvas for our DIY wall art. I carefully laid the paper template of “Love Is Our Religion” onto our 20 x 20-inch piece of 3/4″ thick PureBond® Hardwood Plywood. This step is essential for confirming the scale and placement of your design on the final piece, ensuring everything looks balanced and aesthetically pleasing. While I was immersed in the design phase, Mr. Woodsy generously took on the task of cutting the plywood to size for me. Although I had every intention of tackling the wood cutting myself, the sheet was quite long and heavy, making it a two-person job for safety and precision.

Once the design’s placement on the plywood was confirmed as perfect, I was eager to begin painting. However, Mr. Woodsy, ever the visionary, had other ideas. He felt a plain plywood sign wouldn’t do justice to our sentiment and insisted on adding a frame to elevate its appearance. He quickly got to work, meticulously measuring and cutting some existing moulding we had on hand. His process involved a series of precise steps: measuring, cutting, applying wood glue, clamping the pieces securely, using a nail gun for reinforcement, and finally, painting. While I was busy with other aspects of the project, I regrettably missed capturing photos of his incredible work – a true “tisk tisk” moment on my part!

The Art (and Challenge) of Painting the Frame

After the frame was assembled, Mr. Woodsy applied the first layer of paint. We had chosen a Valspar yellow spray paint primarily for its vibrant color. In hindsight, this choice presented an unexpected challenge. Having never used this particular product before, we were unaware that the spray paint would apply unevenly, splattering and dripping in a way that left our frame looking, frankly, like a hot mess. The experience taught us a valuable lesson about brand consistency and product performance!

Mr. Woodsy, with his characteristic patience and dedication, repeated the process of spray painting, allowing ample drying time, and then sanding the frame multiple times. Each cycle slowly improved the appearance until he was somewhat satisfied with the finish. The ordeal also came with a light-hearted scolding and a firm directive from him: “never buy that brand of spray paint again!” A little note to the universe (and perhaps Rust-Oleum, if you’re reading this): we would absolutely adore a new, sunny yellow color in your consistently reliable spray paint line!

Indeed, that particular spray paint brand became “the offender” that made this segment of the project take significantly longer than anticipated, but we persevered!

Precision Vinyl Cutting with Your Cricut

During one of Mr. Woodsy’s many sanding and painting sessions, I shifted my focus to the equally intricate task of cutting the vinyl lettering. As I mentioned earlier, I used the beautiful Matte Dark Grey Vinyl from My Vinyl Direct. This choice not only offered an elegant, subdued finish but also provided excellent cutting performance. To ensure optimal results, I first cut my vinyl piece to the required size, then referenced a tutorial I created last summer on how to cut vinyl using your Cricut. This refreshed my memory on best practices and settings before I started cutting the actual phrase.

It’s important to note that every Cricut machine, even within the same model family, can behave slightly differently when cutting various materials. My previous tutorial was for my Cricut Personal, but for this project, I was using my Cricut Mini. Before diving into the main design, I always recommend cutting a small practice piece of vinyl. This allows you to fine-tune your settings to achieve a “kiss cut” – which means the blade cuts perfectly through the vinyl layer but leaves the paper backing intact. After some experimentation, I found that the following vinyl settings worked best for my Cricut Mini:

Depth: 1
Pressure: 1
Speed: 3

These settings ensured a clean, precise cut without damaging the backing, which is crucial for easy weeding and transfer. Here’s what my first word looked like after being expertly cut out by the machine.

Mastering Vinyl Transfer and Application

Once the vinyl was cut, the next critical phase was preparing it for transfer. First, I carefully peeled away all the excess vinyl surrounding my word, leaving only the letters exposed on the backing paper. This process, known as weeding, requires a steady hand and keen eye, especially for intricate designs. Next, I took my transfer tape and carefully peeled off its top layer. I then applied the sticky side of the transfer tape directly onto the top of the vinyl letters, smoothing it out thoroughly to ensure good adhesion and prevent any air bubbles. With the transfer tape firmly in place, I then slowly peeled off the entire paper/vinyl cutout from its original backing, leaving the vinyl letters adhered to the transfer tape. This entire assembly was then set aside, ready for application.

I repeated this precise process for the rest of the phrase, “is our religion.”

After each section was cut, I meticulously peeled away all the excess vinyl, revealing the clean lines of the letters. It’s especially important during this weeding stage to make sure you remove the tiny inner vinyl pieces from letters like “o,” “r,” and “a,” to ensure crisp, professional-looking results. Once all the excess vinyl was removed, I carefully placed transfer tape over the remaining vinyl designs and removed them from the Cricut mat. This technique ensures that your vinyl design stays perfectly aligned and intact until it’s ready for its final placement on your chosen surface.

Now came the moment of truth: placing the vinyl onto the freshly painted plywood. This is often where I hit a personal roadblock, as I notoriously struggle with lining things up perfectly straight. Why attempt it now when precision was paramount? Thankfully, I had Mr. Woodsy! I called out to him – a plea really, from my craft room to his relaxation spot on the couch – and begged for his expertise. He truly excels at tedious tasks, and his meticulous nature was exactly what this step demanded. He measured, measured, and then measured again, ensuring every aspect of the placement was absolutely perfect.

With precise measurements complete, it was time to apply the vinyl. I tried my best to explain the delicate technique required for vinyl transfer to wood. Once he carefully stuck the vinyl onto the wood, he, being Mr. Woodsy, measured one more time. I reminded him that once it’s on, it’s not coming off without a fight, so straightness was critical right then and there. Luckily, thanks to his diligent measuring, everything was perfectly aligned!

He meticulously finished applying the second set of vinyl letters, and with that final touch, our custom “Love Is Our Religion” master bedroom sign was triumphantly complete! The combined effort, the challenges overcome, and the sheer joy of seeing our vision come to life made this DIY home improvement project incredibly rewarding.
