Katie: The Creative Crafter & Frugal Decorator
As many of you know, my passion extends beyond the kitchen, where I love to cook and experiment with new recipes. When I’m not whipping up something delicious, you’ll undoubtedly find me immersed in a crafting project! I’ve always cherished the process of creating things by hand, and in recent years, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to dedicate more time to unleashing my creativity. My crafting journey truly took flight in 2007-2008 while planning my wedding. The experience of designing invitations, crafting unique centerpieces, personalizing memory candles, and orchestrating countless other DIY elements for our special day fully unleashed my inner artisan.
That exhilarating period taught me the immense satisfaction of creating something beautiful and meaningful from scratch. I knew then that my dedication to crafty projects wouldn’t end with the wedding celebration. When Jon and I bought our first home a year later, my creative energy naturally shifted towards home decor projects. My goal became clear: how to beautifully decorate our new space without breaking the bank. This led to my enduring motto, one many have heard me repeat: “I’ve got West Elm taste on a Wal*mart budget.” And I truly live by it!
This philosophy drives me to constantly search high and low for the best deals, ingenious hacks, and clever ways to not only make our home decor inexpensive but also to enhance its quality and unique appeal. Expect to see tutorials on transforming thrift store finds, creating high-end lookalikes for a fraction of the cost, upcycling forgotten items, and weaving personal touches into every corner of our home. Jon: The Handy Hero & Woodworking Wizard
When it comes to fixing things, building things, or just figuring out how something works, “amazing handyman” truly sums Jon up perfectly! His innate ability to troubleshoot and repair is astounding; if it’s broken, he’ll fix it—even if he’s never encountered the mechanism before. From repairing a finicky generator motor to expertly crafting custom wooden benches, Jon is the go-to guy for any challenge. His dedication to understanding how things work, combined with a remarkable knack for practical application, makes him an invaluable asset around the house and in the workshop.
Since we bought our home in 2009, Jon has become thoroughly absorbed in a myriad of home renovation projects. This passion for transforming our living space has also led him to pick up yet another incredibly rewarding hobby: woodworking. What started with borrowing a friend’s lathe quickly evolved into a deep dive into the craft of woodturning. He’s become adept at spinning beautiful wood and acrylic pens, each piece a testament to his growing skill and precision. His aspiration is to refine his craft further and eventually begin selling his unique creations online, sharing his passion with a wider audience.
Beyond pens, Jon has already spun an elegant wine stopper and eagerly looks forward to expanding his repertoire to include custom bowls, sophisticated pepper mills, and virtually anything else his imaginative mind can conceive on the lathe. His commitment to detail and his love for a good challenge are evident in every project. Jon recently completed a particularly heartwarming endeavor: building a custom toy chest for his only nephew. This intricate project, requiring careful planning and precise execution, is a perfect example of his dedication to creating lasting, functional, and beautiful pieces.
