Picture this: a simple roof, supported by a mere six 4×4 posts, hovering above an existing deck. That’s it. No walls, no screens, just a basic shelter. It was functional, perhaps, but certainly lacked character and true purpose. However, one serene afternoon, while sitting out on that very deck, an idea sparked. I envisioned a complete transformation, a true outdoor oasis where we could relax, entertain, and genuinely extend our living space into the beauty of our backyard.

That initial spark ignited a full-fledged deck renovation project. We decided to enhance the structural integrity by adding six more 4×4 posts, effectively doubling the support. Then came the exciting part: building the window-like frames, creating the structure that would eventually hold the screens. Not stopping there, we decided to elevate the functionality of the space by moving the sink outdoors and tiling a counter area, creating a practical outdoor serving station. For several wonderful years, it looked absolutely spectacular, a true highlight of our home.

I managed to dig up a less-than-perfect “before” picture – a snapshot that captures the raw potential rather than refined beauty. What started as minor wear and tear quickly escalated, turning our beloved space into a shell of its former self. This year, reclaiming this space has become my most significant project, a major outdoor structural repair and aesthetic revival.

I want to be transparent and show you the current state, not just for accountability, but to illustrate the incredible potential that still lies beneath the neglect. Frankly, it’s almost as bad as the initial “before” state. We were away for much of the summer, and even when we were home, we simply didn’t make time to enjoy or maintain it. There’s no good excuse, just the harsh reality of deferred maintenance. But the good news is, the “do-over” project is firmly on the horizon, ready to commence as soon as the weather permits.

Drum roll, please… A Glimpse into the Present Reality

During the harsh winter months, the situation only worsens, exposing the vulnerabilities of the structure. It’s evident that this area is crying out for some serious Tender Loving Care. The elements have taken their toll, revealing areas that demand immediate attention and a comprehensive exterior refresh plan.

Let’s zoom in on some of the specific damages. The bottom of one of the screen doors, for instance, is completely compromised. In fact, both screen doors are beyond repair and will need to be entirely replaced to restore both functionality and aesthetic appeal to our outdoor retreat. This is a critical step in making the space usable and bug-free once again.

Then there’s this colossal piece of wood, which I’ve dubbed “the largest splinter known to mankind.” It’s a stark reminder of the extensive wood rot and structural compromises that have occurred. Addressing this will involve careful removal of damaged sections and replacement with new, treated lumber to ensure the safety and longevity of the entire deck renovation.

This next image, a true “tragedy,” speaks volumes without needing many words. It’s a clear depiction of structural failure and decay, highlighting the urgent need for a thorough assessment and strategic repairs. Every exposed element has been battered by the elements, making this outdoor living space currently uninhabitable.

And then, there’s my once beautiful tile-work. A labor of love that transformed a simple counter into an elegant outdoor serving station. Now, a sad testament to neglect. The tiles, once neatly laid and grouted, have come undone, scattered in a forlorn heap. This will require a complete tile replacement and potentially a re-evaluation of the underlying structure to prevent future issues.

The sight of my carefully chosen tiles now simply lying in a pile beside the sink is a painful reminder of what needs to be done. It highlights the extent of the water damage and the breakdown of adhesives, calling for a meticulous approach to its restoration. Our plan includes completely re-tiling this section, perhaps with a more weather-resistant grout this time, as part of our comprehensive patio makeover.

Looking Ahead: The Grand “Do-Over”

My ultimate goal is to restore this space to its former glory, to a point where I will want to “Come In and Sit a Spell” once more. But let’s be honest, that day is not today. The vision, however, is clear, and the determination is strong. This isn’t just a repair job; it’s a revival, a commitment to bringing our backyard oasis back to life. It involves addressing every single issue – from structural repairs and wood staining to screen replacement and a brand-new tile installation.
