The cool tones of blue and aqua mingled beautifully with shimmering silver ornaments, reflecting the twinkling lights and casting a gentle glow throughout the room. Even our beloved furry friend, Murphy, found a cozy spot to admire the dazzling display, perfectly embodying the relaxed holiday atmosphere we aimed to create. Following the joy of decorating the tree, we turned our attention to the delightful task of gift-giving. But instead of traditional wrapping paper, we opted for a charming and sustainable approach: presenting our gifts in mason jars. This creative idea not only adds a rustic, handcrafted touch to your presents but also offers an eco-friendly alternative that recipients can reuse. Mason jars are incredibly versatile and can hold anything from homemade treats and craft supplies to small trinkets and beauty products. It’s a thoughtful way to package gifts, making each one feel personal and special.

To complete the mason jar gifts, we added custom gift tags, elevating the presentation with a personal flair. Our holiday home tour also featured our inviting turquoise and red keeping room, a space designed for relaxation and cherished conversations. Did you happen to catch a glimpse of the vibrant green sign integrated into our holiday decor? That eye-catching “Merry & Bright” decal was generously provided by Candi from Welcoming Wall. It perfectly complements the festive ambiance and adds a personalized touch to our home. This project is incredibly rewarding, allowing you to create a custom piece of holiday decor with minimal effort and materials. It’s a fantastic way to utilize leftover wood and infuse your personal style into your seasonal arrangements.

As luck would have it, our workshop is brimming with an assortment of scrap wood pieces – a treasure trove for any DIY enthusiast. For this project, we serendipitously found the ideal piece of lumber, just the right size to beautifully display our “Merry & Bright” decal. Using scrap wood not only makes this project budget-friendly but also gives new life to materials that might otherwise go to waste. It’s a wonderful way to create unique, character-filled decor pieces.

Materials You’ll Need for Your DIY Holiday Sign:

**Scrap Wood:** Choose a piece large enough to comfortably accommodate your chosen decal or lettering. The beauty of scrap wood is its unique imperfections, adding character to your finished sign.
**Decal:** A vinyl decal, like our “Merry & Bright” design, makes this project incredibly easy. Alternatively, if you prefer a different method, consider creating your own lettering with stencils or freehand painting for a truly personalized touch.
**Krylon Chalky Spray Paint**: We opted for the vibrant “New Leaf” green, which provides a beautiful matte finish and is incredibly easy to work with. Chalky paint offers excellent coverage and is perfect for achieving a slightly distressed, vintage look.
**Sandpaper or Sanding Block**: Essential for smoothing the wood surface and creating a distressed effect after painting.
**Picture Hanger**: For easily displaying your finished sign on a wall.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your Merry & Bright Sign:

Prepare Your Wood: Begin by ensuring your scrap wood is clean and dry. If there are any rough edges or splinters, give it a light sanding to create a smooth surface for painting. Wipe away any dust with a lint-free cloth.
Paint the Wood: In a well-ventilated area, apply an even coat of Krylon Chalky Spray Paint to your piece of wood. Hold the can about 6-8 inches away and use steady, sweeping motions. Apply multiple thin coats, allowing each coat to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions, until you achieve full coverage and your desired color intensity. Our “New Leaf” green truly popped with a couple of coats.
Lightly Sand for a Distressed Look (Optional): Once the paint is completely dry, take your sandpaper or sanding block and lightly sand the edges and perhaps some areas of the surface. We created a subtle striped pattern by sanding in specific directions. This is the beauty of chalky paint – it sands effortlessly, allowing you to easily achieve a beautifully distressed, rustic, or vintage aesthetic. Focus on areas where natural wear and tear would occur for an authentic look.
Clean the Surface: After sanding, gently wipe the board with a lint-free cloth to remove any paint dust or residue. This ensures a clean surface for your decal to adhere properly.
Position the Decal: Carefully remove the backing from your vinyl decal. Before fully adhering it, measure and strategically position the decal on your painted wood. Take your time to ensure it’s centered and straight, using a ruler or measuring tape if needed.
Adhere the Decal: Once satisfied with the placement, firmly press the decal onto the wood. Use an old credit card, a squeegee, or a similar flat object to smooth over the decal, working from the center outwards. This helps to eliminate any air bubbles and ensures a strong bond to the painted surface.
Remove the Transfer Backing: Starting at one edge, slowly and carefully peel away the top transfer backing of the decal. Do this gently, watching to make sure the vinyl lettering adheres correctly to the wood. If any part of the decal lifts, press it back down with your finger or the credit card and continue peeling.
Add a Picture Hanger: Finally, attach a suitable picture hanger to the back of your sign. Choose a hanger appropriate for the weight of your wood piece. Now your beautiful, handmade “Merry & Bright” sign is ready to be hung and admired!

Our entryway, the first impression guests receive, underwent a delightful transformation throughout the holiday season. The last time you saw the entry, it was dressed in a vibrant array of traditional Christmas decor, setting a lively and colorful tone for the home. It’s always exciting to see how a space can evolve with different styling choices.

Then, as the season progressed, I decided to refresh it with a serene white Christmas village display – a tranquil shift that felt perfect for the colder, quieter days leading up to the New Year. This transition allowed us to enjoy a different facet of holiday beauty, proving that holiday decor doesn’t have to be static. A white Christmas village evokes a sense of nostalgic charm and peacefulness, offering a stunning visual contrast to the earlier vibrant scheme. It’s a versatile way to keep your holiday decor fresh and engaging throughout December.

Finally, for the ultimate festive flourish, we made one last change to the entryway, deciding that our newly crafted “Merry & Bright” sign deserved a place of honor right here. Its vibrant green hue and cheerful message perfectly encapsulated the holiday spirit we aimed to convey, greeting everyone with a welcoming burst of cheer. This final placement brought all our holiday themes together, creating a cohesive and beautifully curated festive experience right from the moment you step through the door.

Extending the Celebration Outdoors: Our Festive Patio

Surprisingly, the unseasonably warm weather, hovering around 70º, allowed us the unique opportunity to extend our holiday celebrations outdoors. We’ve been spending a lot of time outside, enjoying the mild temperatures and transforming our patio into an open-air festive retreat. It’s not every year you get to enjoy Christmas decor under such pleasant conditions, making these moments even more special.

Our outdoor patio mirrored the vibrant red and turquoise theme from our indoor spaces, creating a seamless flow of holiday cheer. Potted plants, cozy throws, and splashes of festive colors brought the Christmas spirit to our alfresco setting. The unexpected warmth allowed us to truly embrace outdoor living during a season typically reserved for indoor coziness. It highlighted how versatile holiday decor can be, adapting to various environments and climate conditions, making every corner of our home, inside and out, feel inviting and celebratory.
