For this project, I crafted two adorable characters: a cheerful scarecrow to embrace the cozy vibes of autumn and a jolly snowman ready to spread winter cheer. Creating these two charming characters was a straightforward and incredibly rewarding process. Let’s delve into the materials and tools you’ll need, followed by a detailed guide to assembling your very own reversible door hanger.

Essential Materials for Your Seasonal Door Hanger Project

Before you begin, gather all your supplies. The Home Depot workshop provided a comprehensive list, making the preparation seamless:

  • 1 – 1 ̋ x 6 ̋ x 8 ́ Tongue and Groove Pattern Stock Board: This forms the main body of your door hanger, providing a lovely textured surface.
  • 1 – 1 ̋ x 4 ̋ x 8 ́ Common or Pine Board: Used for the distinctive hat brim and supporting angles.
  • 1 – Box #8 x 1 1⁄4 ̋ Phillips Square Drive Flat-Head Full Thread Zinc Coated Multi-Material Screws: These robust screws will securely join your wooden components.
  • 1 – Pack #8 15 1⁄8 ̋ Zinc-Plated Steel Eye Screws: Essential for attaching the rope hanger at the top.
  • 1 – 1⁄4 ̋ x 50 ́ Manila Rope: Provides a sturdy and rustic hanging mechanism.
  • 1 – 8 oz. Carpenter’s Wood Glue: Crucial for creating a strong bond between the tongue and groove boards.

Tools You’ll Need for the Workshop

Having the right tools makes any DIY project smoother and more enjoyable. Here’s what was used during the workshop:

  • Tape Measure: For precise measurements of your wood pieces.
  • Pencil: To accurately mark your cutting lines.
  • Safety Goggles: Always wear these to protect your eyes when working with saws and drills.
  • Saw (a miter saw was used for accuracy and ease): Ideal for clean, straight, and angled cuts.
  • Screwdriver: To drive in the screws and secure the pieces together.
  • Clamps: Indispensable for holding boards firmly in place while the glue dries, ensuring a tight bond.
  • Drill/Drill Bits: For pre-drilling pilot holes, which prevents wood from splitting when inserting screws.

Step-by-Step Construction: Bringing Your Door Hanger to Life

1. Measure, Mark, and Cut Your Wood Pieces

Precision is key in this initial step. Using your tape measure and pencil, carefully mark your wood according to these specifications:

  • From the 1 ̋ x 6 ̋ x 8 ́ Tongue and Groove Pattern Stock Board, measure and mark three (3) 32 ̋ sections. These will form the main vertical body of your door hanger.
  • From the 1 ̋ x 4 ̋ x 8 ́ Common or Pine Board, cut two (2) 24 ̋ sections. These will be used for the horizontal brim of the hat.
  • Additionally, from the same 1 ̋ x 4 ̋ x 8 ́ common board, cut two angled sections. These pieces will serve as supportive elements for the hat brim. Each angled section should measure 4 ̋ long along the top edge and 3 ̋ long along the bottom edge of the board. These specific angles create the classic hat brim silhouette.

Remember to always wear your safety goggles when operating a saw. Looking at the cut diagram below, you can visualize how these pieces come together to form the base structure of your seasonal character door hanger.

2. Assemble the Base of the Door Hanger

This step creates the canvas for your characters:

  • Lay the three 32 ̋ tongue and groove sections vertically side by side. Ensure the tongue of one board fits neatly into the groove of the next.
  • Apply a continuous bead of carpenter’s wood glue into the grooves of the boards. The glue will create a strong, lasting bond between the panels.
  • Carefully secure the boards together, making sure they are perfectly level across both the top and bottom edges. Use clamps to hold the boards tightly while the glue dries. This is crucial for a flat and stable base, which will make decorating much easier.

3. Attach the Hat Brim Structure

The hat brim is what gives your character its distinct headwear. Follow these instructions carefully:

  • On the right side of your assembled base, measure and mark 8 ̋ down from the top edge.
  • On the left side of the base, measure and mark 12 ̋ down from the top edge. These asymmetrical marks are intentional, creating the downward slope of a classic hat brim.
  • Take one of your 24 ̋ sections and angle it flat across the assembled base, aligning it with the 8 ̋ mark on the right and the 12 ̋ mark on the left.
  • Ensure that the board overhangs the base equally on both the left and right sides. This symmetrical overhang is vital for the visual balance of the hat.
  • Secure this 24 ̋ board to the base using six (6) 1 1⁄4 ̋ screws. I highly recommend pre-drilling pilot holes for each screw, two in each tongue and groove board. Pre-drilling prevents the wood from splitting, especially near the edges, and ensures the screws go in smoothly for a secure attachment.
  • Next, slide the angular cut pieces underneath the attached 24 ̋ board. Position them so they are flush with both the main base and the 24 ̋ board on both sides, creating a solid, triangular support for the brim.
  • Secure these angular cut pieces to the 24 ̋ board using additional 1 1⁄4 ̋ screws. Repeat this process on the other side of the hat brim to ensure robust support.
  • Finally, to prepare for hanging, add steel eye screws to the very top edge of your assembled door hanger. Once the structure is complete, you will attach the manila rope to these eye screws.

The Fun Part: Personalizing Your Seasonal Characters

Now that the structural assembly is complete, it’s time for the most creative and enjoyable part: decorating! This is where you can let your imagination soar and truly make these door hangers your own. The workshop encouraged using any paint and supplies you desire to bring your seasonal characters to life.

As someone who appreciates simple yet impactful projects, I opted for just two colors of craft paint on both sides of my door hanger. To maintain a uniform and appealing look for my snowmen’s faces, I cut an index card into an egg shape. This clever trick allowed me to easily trace consistent eyes onto each snowman, ensuring a cohesive and professional finish. For the snowman’s festive scarf, I chose a beautiful Christmas ribbon, adding a touch of holiday sparkle. A few carefully placed holly leaves on the brim of the hat completed the wintery look, giving it that classic, cheerful snowman vibe.

When it came to my charming scarecrows, I wanted to capture a rustic, autumnal feel. I took a vibrant turquoise bandana and cut it in half, securing it with hot glue to create a jaunty, wind-blown scarf. For the hat brim, I couldn’t resist adding a strip of natural burlap, which provided wonderful texture and an authentic farmhouse aesthetic. A small bundle of raffia, carefully arranged to resemble wispy hair peeking out from under the hat, completed the scarecrow’s endearing look, making it perfectly suited for welcoming fall guests.
