The journey to create this serene summer kitchen has been nothing short of a labor of love. We recently undertook a significant renovation project, transforming what was once a utilitarian 2-car garage into a charming, functional, and utterly delightful farmhouse cottage. Today, we’re focusing on the heart of this new space – the kitchen – a room that has been meticulously designed to embody the light, refreshing spirit of summer while retaining its rustic, cozy farmhouse roots. We’ve been eagerly anticipating the moment to share this transformation, and that day has finally arrived!

It’s hard to convey the immense happiness and satisfaction we feel now that this space is complete. Just imagine, it started as a dark, dingy, and forgotten corner of our property, primarily serving as a laundry and storage area within the garage. The vision was to breathe new life into it, transforming it into a bright, airy, and inviting farmhouse-fresh haven. The before-and-after contrast is truly remarkable, highlighting the power of thoughtful design and a clear aesthetic goal.

From Garage to Dream Kitchen: The Transformation Unveiled

Witnessing the progression from a purely utilitarian structure to a fully functional and aesthetically pleasing living space is incredibly rewarding. Every detail, from structural changes to cosmetic finishes, was chosen to evoke that classic, timeless farmhouse charm.

One of the foundational decisions for the entire cottage, and especially the kitchen, was the paint color. We opted for Sherwin Williams – Alabaster, a beautiful, soft white that provides the perfect neutral backdrop for any seasonal decor. This choice was deliberate, allowing us the flexibility to easily switch out accent colors and decorative elements to match the season or our mood without committing to a dominant palette. For summer, and perhaps even beyond, we’ve gravitated towards refreshing shades of blue, beautifully complemented by vibrant pops of color from fresh flowers like peonies and hydrangeas, along with the cheerful zest of yellow lemons. This combination instantly evokes a sense of calm and natural beauty.

Thoughtful Details and DIY Touches

Achieving the authentic farmhouse look often involves incorporating unique, character-filled pieces. The old window chalkboard, for instance, found its perfect home on one of our shiplap walls. It adds a touch of vintage charm and offers a dynamic space for handwritten notes, grocery lists, or seasonal greetings. What’s truly wonderful is that many of the decorative items used in this kitchen were pieces we already owned. It speaks volumes about the joy of collecting and curating over time – perhaps I’m a bit of an “accessory hoarder,” but in the best possible way, as these cherished items bring so much personality and history to the new space!

Little details make a big difference. A simple arrangement of fresh lemons in a rustic berry basket introduces a vibrant burst of color and a delightful, subtle fragrance. The open shelving provides an ideal display area for our collection of aqua and turquoise dishes, adding splashes of color that feel distinctly summery and cheerful against the crisp white shiplap walls. These elements combine to create a visually appealing and inviting atmosphere that truly captures the essence of a comfortable farmhouse home.

Every now and then, you stumble upon a find that just clicks with your vision. This adorable turquoise silverware set was one such discovery, snagged at Hobby Lobby for a fantastic 50% off! Its cheerful hue complements our chosen summer palette perfectly and adds a fun, unexpected element to our farmhouse table settings. Of course, no farmhouse kitchen would be complete without classic old mason jars, which we utilize for everything from holding flowers to organizing smaller items, embodying both practicality and rustic charm.

A special thank you goes to Aspect Tiles for providing us with these innovative stick-on glass tiles. We chose the ‘Morning Dew’ shade, a serene, subtle color that adds a touch of sophistication and depth to the backsplash area behind the stove. While the installation required some careful cuts and precision, the convenience and the stunning final result made it entirely worthwhile. This tile truly grounds our color scheme, bringing that committed pop of “morning mist” color and a fresh, clean look to this compact kitchen space.

Beyond the tile, every element was chosen to enhance both form and function. A rustic faux olive bucket serves as an ideal holder for spatulas and large spoons, keeping essential tools organized while contributing to the authentic farmhouse aesthetic. It’s these small, practical, yet stylish additions that complete the look and make the kitchen a joy to work in.

Of course, a kitchen isn’t just for cooking; it’s for living, for gathering, and for enjoying simple pleasures. We believe coffee always tastes a little better when accompanied by a sweet treat, a philosophy we wholeheartedly embrace in this cozy nook. This kitchen, though compact, feels incredibly spacious and inviting, designed for both everyday functionality and moments of relaxation.
